An interesting read on bass here (http://www.cerwin-vega.com/pdf/Understanding_Bass.pdf) from Cerwin Vega

No, the product specialist for Stanton & Cerwin Vega gave me a hard copy today, and I've just been flicking through it (sad on a Friday night I know LoL), noticed a link on the cover page. He didn't mention there's a video version of it

No, there isnt a video version, I just though you may have got the link form John's video on YouTube today as he put that same link in the description.

Can't blame you about flicking through it, theres nothing on TV....Again! :(

So after reading the PDF I can say that for most gigs the best cab style for most mobile dj's would be the reflex cab (front loaded).

I have a Bandpass style cab now and I can agree with that the sound does not throw as well as a front loaded cab.

Looks like ill be off to get some fron loaded cabs. Maby look in to folded horn cabs for the larger gigs or outdoor functions. Need to cover all corners. :D

I built a couple of bass reflex cabs but they were too big and heavy to carry around. I now just use front loaded cabs with vents.

Same thing. The speaker facing the front with a tuned port to extend the bass.

I just put a 4 inch port in the rear so the cabinet doesnt compress the air as much.

In my bass reflex cabs the speaker was rear facing so was a cabinet inside a cabinet which doubles the size and weight. The speaker sound then was directed up and down through two tapered vents to the front.

Your theory about 'not compressing the air so much' is wrong.
That combination would still have acted as a Helmholtz resonator, just completely out of tune with the rest of the components, unless you were extremely lucky!

But yes, ported cabintets are good all-rounders, offering good efficiency and relatively light-weight construction. (As compared to a horn or bandpass.)

I used the WinISD program to determine the size and length of the hole in the cabinet.

WinISD is only a tool to help you.... there are 10000 things that will effect how a driver & speaker cabinet work together / or not.

b&c have some great yet simple designs on there website which are free :) They have also done most the work for you as there are cut sheets available to download and there tell you what driver(s) do & don't work.

I prefer to use Bass Box Pro. Much better program in my personal opinion.
