From what I have read, apple are very reliable but have limited software for them atm.

I would say go to an Apple store and try one out. I actually got my Ipod Classic a £10 cheaper than what other shops were selling them at.

You will never look back. If you were to look you could normally find a program that does the same that the windows version but for mac. I've had my MacBook Pro for a year now. I have NEVER had to reinstall. Leopard has never crashed just because it wants to. most of the time the crashes were causes by be fiddling :o

How about a couple of hundred quid off that price...?

I've had all my stuff from the refurb store and it's 100% perfect and guaranteed. The only difference is it turns up in a brown box.

Over the last year we've gone 100% Mac (apart from my R4 laptop on the rig) and I'll never look back. Being a Unix programmer helps as I can flit between GUI and command line. Spend £40 on Parallels and you can run Windows too. GO FOR IT!!

Is there any actual 'proper' DJ software avalaible for the Mac yet?
I seem to recall PCDJ were going to do a Mac version....

I once found a Denon emulator, which did exactly that, but it had no record case of any sort, so it was frankly completely useless:(

And what about hardware controllers..... you can't seriously DJ with just a mouse:eek:

Well as I use the macbook on the rig only for backup and background sets I find DJ1800 perfectly acceptable but there are others out there such as Megaseg and UltraMixer, at least one of which supports a Hercules if I'm not mistaken.

Unless Micro$haft were to pull a very large bunny out of a particularly impressive hat, there's no way in a million years I'm heading back to that camp. And I do a LOT of IT work.

Well I am going to take a trip to the Apple store tomorrow and get me a Mac, I know that Virtual DJ/Numark Cue works with Macs so I will give that a go.

Thanks for all the information guys.

I would like to move to a Mac platform, but compatibility is a constant issue. I do a lot of things with a computer, my whole house is networked, including various Xboxes, servers and media devices. A Mac just isn't diverse enough.

As for DJing and music production, generally speaking, it is a much better choice than a Windows based system.

Have tried Megaseg - it's a very very good DJ program and the layout and functionability, etc, compares with most PC packages.

Serato Scratch Live was built for Mac, with windows added as an after thought. Iveryone that i know swears by Mac's for audio processing and generally anything to do with music/sound.

I will be using it at the weekend with Serato Scratch Live so I will post a review as how I get on with it on the road.

Just would like some views on these and the realiability of the laptops.

To be honest I personally wouldnt touch a MAC.
There is such a massive amount of software for the IBM PC.
Vista is now coming of age with SP1 and the updates, it does seem to be much more reliable now. I write software for PC's and Microsoft provide the compiler free of charge.

I take it you have never been on a mac then. There are Developer kits for mac pre installed. Also ones for the iPhone.

All the customers I have ever had always just wanted software for the PC.
The resources for anyone writing programs for a PC are incredible.

I have seen Macs and they do have their own niches but I want the PC market not the Mac market.

As a MAC user I thinks all windows user are missing out. As MACS do have Intel CPUs instead of the G4.

MAC will run Windows via a virtual machine. I use PC DJ via Windows XP machine and do not have any problems. But nowadays there is a VJ and MixMeister available for the MAC. I personally do not suffer any problems with MAC versions.

Just remember once you had a MAC you will never go back.

My MAC SPECS MacBook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Intel 2.4GHz Duo Core CPU.

After spending 15 years with Windows PCs I moved to a mac.

They are comparatively expensive, there is less software and you feel like an outsider with the scale of windows users out there.

But I've loaded nearly 200 applications and it runs as fast now as it did when I first bought it. The interface is elegant and the good programs are excellent.

I still have to use XP and Vista but quite honestly the user experience of a mac is far more pleasurable.

I guess you don't know what you're missing if you only ever use Windows.

I guess it all comes to personal preference.

I admit, I do like the interface on apple machines. Does look a lot better compared to microsoft.

The downside of them is the lack of software and compatibility.

Heres what i think. More people buying Macs = more software made for it.

Have not got time to read all posts, but go for mac. reliable, robust and stand the test of time. most windows programs work too.

BEST BUY I HAVE EVER MADE.

second hand powerbook G4'S (what i use to dj and run three businesses) go for £200.

(ps: do not listen to windows users who have never used macs)
