Hello!

I'm in need of an extension cable for my lighting.

I will have 8 lights on my large rig;

4 Scanners
2 Magic Gobos
2 LED Effects

I am finding it difficult to find an 8-way black extension cable, and i'd prefer not to use 2 extension cables. So would it be safe to buy a 6 way extension cable, and use one of those multi plug things (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?MenuNo=83967&MenuName=Multi-Plugs&FromMenu=y&doy=12m12)?

If so, i'm struggling to find black ones, so i'm guessing i'll just have to spray paint these ones?

Thanks,
Ollie J

why not use 2 of these instead

linky (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-WAY-IEC-POWER-BOX-SPLITTER-DISCO-DJ-KARAOKE-BAND-GIG_W0QQitemZ290281144876QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Com puting_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item290281144876&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318)

you should be o.k using double adapters on your led fixtures but i never have seen black ones

Hey,

That's a cool idea, however i'd prefer not to have two sources of electricity on the truss.

Still, it may be the only way of doing it!

Any other ideas?

do you mean one of these, black 6 Extension Lead 2mtr Long, cable may be a bit short at only 2 mtrs but its not hard to extend the cable, to any required length or to plug into another extension

"A 6-way extension lead finished in black with approximately 2m of mains cable and terminated in a 13A mains plug.Note: Model supplied may vary slightly from that illustrated"

there are approx 4 6 Way Extension, 3rd Down,6th Down,12th Down,16th Down.

Hi,

I have got my eye on the Maplin one.

So i was considering buying that one, WITH a couple of 'multi plugs' so i can have 8 lights on a 6 way plug.

My question is, is this safe? I know a UK plug socket can handle approx 3000w.

4 dynamos = 400w plus 100 for motors? = 500w
2 Magic Gobos (soon to be LED) = 200w plus motors = 300w
2 LED Lights = 17w each = 34w

total: approx 834w, so this would be safe to run through the one socket, providing the extension cable has a good enough rating. However is it safe enough, so run the 2 LED lights through a multi-plug then run the 2 magic gobos through another multi-plug plugged into the 6 way extension lead.

I just need confirmation that this is safe to do! :)

Don't use those multi plug things been told they have a habit of setting them self's alight!

Hence i'm asking the question whether they're safe to use with disco equipment ;)

Well it really depends if you "overload" them with power

No not really. It was to do with the cables pulling on them, pulling them out the socket there in and well sparking!

So i'm probabaly better off getting two extension cables then?

just use a couple of IEC splitters, its very safe, you could put the 2 LED pars on one IEC and the 2 magic gobos on another, gets you down to 6 plugs

Hi there :)

The LED lights are ADJ Starball LEDs :) And they have IEC inputs, however the magic gobos have moulded plugs. I've actually got a cable to be able to plug all 4 scanners into one cable... What if i paired up 2 scanners, anohter 2 scanners and the starballs?

Then i'd need 5 power outputs?

Never use multiplugs, even in the home as most of them don't have a fuse in. recipe for disaster. :)

Okay, haha :p

I think i'll just buy two 6 way extension cables, and extend the cord.

Things like these can be useful, available elsewhere also.

 That would be awesome!

Would it be safe to run two of my scanners off one of those?

Oh yuss. :D I regularly ran two 250w filament units off one cable

Awesome, looks like i'm sorted then!

2 scanners on one cable, other 2 scanners on another cable then 2 ADJ Starballs off another one. Then magic gobos on seperate cables.

That's 5 :) So i could just get one 6 way extension cable now, and job done.

Thanks Peter :)

Just watch how far apart they're spaced. ;)

Don't forget, its just not the watts you need to watch. You need to watch the amps aswell.

I think most single wall sockets can supply 13 amps with just over 3000 watts of power if I am correct???

Yeah, you're correct i believe.

How do you work out how many amps a light draws?

250w approx 1amp. ;) :D

Watts = Volts x Amps

Correct, Why not just get 2 6 way extension leads and run them up either side of the stand then you are distirbuting the power evenly too.

Could do.

What i'm going to do, is setup my trussing in my front room (lets hope mum doesn't mind :o ), put my lights up on it, and work out what the best way will be. I also need to get custom DMX cables cut to length aswell. So way aswell do it in one hit.

Bloomin' 'ek guys! Isn't it obvious you could just run one long cable up with a 2 way on the end, then plug a pair of short 4 ways in to it?

That's what I've done a few times.

The Dynamo lamps are 12 volt ;) as are the Magic Gobo's
