hello some advise please

iv got to do a 13th birthday party sat night. The lady asked me for no smoke machine or bubbles just lights.
She also said no games as her daughter thinks she will look silly in front of her mates.

Disco is for 2 hours with no time to stop for food i did suggest to her how about a little karaoke she was up for that ok.

Just wondering do you guys have any ideas on how to tackle this party i was thinking maybe some dances like macarenna ymca and maybe finish on the greece megamix.

Any ideas in a short time please

Thank you davey i was gonna go with those dances, But you see 2 hours feels like 4 hours when the kids are not going to be eating.

I have been given a playlist but only a few songs that they really want played.

Im thinking i might given then a little karaoke in between songs i have to see how it plans out.

First thing i will be doing is reading the dance floor. And i was thinking i might get the parent up to dance to a few party songs maybe a good idea who knows.

Thank you davey hope you have a good one

Mark

Marc, High school musical tracks are a must for children that age!

Play their requests.. watch them dance for a minute and then get bored.. such is a 13th birthday in my experience!

You can't do all the interaction/games etc. as they're too cool at that age.. but they're not quite that cool to be able to dance for a whole song!

I hate them and try to avoid if possible!

See any High School Musical? No. Thought not. ;)

Kill the lights. Use your meanest effects. Play it LOUDER THAN USUAL. String the music together in a sensible fashion hopping genres every 3 or 4 songs and you'll keep them dancing all night and calling for more at the end.

Yep, same kind of requests I get, but they just don't dance to them, at least not for the whole song anyway!

Recent hits and clubland. As Martin says play it loud.
As far as dancing goes I find it is all or nothing. My experience is if they want loads of R'n'B it will flop but if they like more club music it will be ok. A generalisation I know but this is what I find.
I normally try and offer karaoke as well to break the party.
2 Hours - your lucky.

The best thing to do is ask what music is required. 13 year olds either want high school musical and pop songs or they want rock, club and heavy metal!

Yes get a request list from them or just scroll through the charts. Definitely not grease all the time etc. makarena stuff might work depends on their culture. make a fuss of her and make her friends jealous :)

I think what you do and play depends on the maturity of the kids. We've had parties with lots of interaction and parties without. Some have liked all the silly dances and HSM and some haven't.

Well done that man, bet you feel all warm inside now. :D
To be honest, that's an age group I always like working for, as there's no alcohol, they're seriously into their music, and usually provide a near constant stream of requests, thus removing the need for you to actually think. :D Better still if there's not many lads. ;)

When i did my first 13th last weekend, i only got about 4 requests and that was mainly from the adults who where attending the party. I ask loads of times for requests etc but hardly got any from the kids. They were all dancing all night, so i must of been doing ok if not asking me for requests etc.

Depends on your T&C. I always state that for under 18's at least 2 responsible adults (preferably the organiser) must be present.

to true we are a disco not a childminding service, parents have tobe there to control the children, who's responsible if things get out of hand or if they start drinking, you have tobe so careful what you do around minors ,you would be crazy to put yourself in that position ,no parents no disco i'm affraid

Well i did the party was about 10 parents there.
Its amazing how you can get the kids and parents bonding together for some child special day. I played all the dance chart stuff then towards the end of the night i played some oldies like greece megamix then ymca and thriller see the kids and parent all dancing went down well

Just to cap things off next day i got 2 calls from some of the parents who were there dancing asking can they book me for there childs birthday so parents do go down to the kids level and join in

cheers
