Hi all,

Just got back in from doing the wedding I was on about.
It was at The Vyne in Sherborne St John, nr Basingstoke. Lovely venue and really nice, helpful staff, especially the wedding co-ordinator (he said to me at the end of the night that I am now going to be his "number 1 recommendation" as he was very impressed.

I did a kind of gig log but not sure if I will use it. I also need to see if the photos came out any good as I was using my phone because the missus took the new camera to work today and I left before she came home.

So, very nice couple with 110 guests and the majority I would say were in their late 20's early 30's. My mate provided the casino tables upstairs and they had a chocolate fountain and BBQ too. It was all very nice.

I left the house at 5.15pm and got there at 5.30pm. I was told that I could get in once the room was cleared. (I put the uplighting in yesterday). When I arrived I was told they were running around 45 minutes late as they had 2 powercuts during the day due to thunder and lighting...this worried me a bit. I eventually got into the room at 6.45pm (I was due to start at 7.00pm) and was set up and ready to go for 7.20pm.

Because of the size of the room being a bit smallish, I decided to try out my active speakers and they worked well. Lighting used was 2 x Acme Dynamos, 2 x Littled's and 2 x Mystic Leds and they filled the room easily. Alongside the uplighting it looked really cool.

I had a mass of requests. The bride was into Take That, Girls Aloud etc and the Groom was an Indie Kid. I thought I would struggle but it went really well. People were really up for it and it made me feel good as I had been feeling rough all day.

Best songs of the night were Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon and Mr Brightside by The Killers...these two tracks had everyone up singing along. Their first dance was Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. Last song of the night was Never Forget by Take That and it really worked. I chose it. The Bride came up, kissed me on the cheek and said "Wow, I'd forgotten about that!".

Negatives.... Well, one guy in particular who had far too many drinks and thought he was Mr Hardman took a dislike to me and my equipment. He was knocking into people but as they were all friends they didn't seem to mind - I did! I was cool at first and just keeping an eye on him until he fell into my speaker stand. I jumped from behind the console and grabbed the stand before it had a chance to fall and then said to the guy to be careful - He just laughed. About 2 minutes later he was on the floor as he had slipped over, he tried to get up and fell backwards, again he went into my speaker stand. He looked up, laughed again and then went back to the middle of the dancefloor. I decided to have a word with the groom and mentioned that he might want to keep an eye on the guy as he was in danger of spoiling their night. Good timing really because as I walked back towards my equipment, the guy was shaking the speaker stand and looking at me. We both ran towards him, I grabbed the stand and the groom grabbed the guy and said a few choice words to him before disappearing outside. I was now pretty wound up and was finding it hard to keep my cool....but I did. The groom came up to me and couldn't apologise enough and told me that the guy wouldn't be back in. There was about 30 minutes to go.

Around 10 minutes from the end, in he walked. He walked straight up to me with a smirk on his face and decided to push me. I looked around to see if anyone was nearby to witness him but there wasn't so I had a 'little word' in his ear to let him know what I thought and what was instore for him if he carried on. There are limits and yes, I could have said over the mic that I wasn't prepared to carry on but I didn't want to do that. The rest of the guests and the Bride and Groom were great, it was just this one idiot so I thought the best way was to have a word and put him straight. It worked.

To be honest, it didn't affect my night really. I got a £50 tip from the Brides dad and lots of positive feedback.

Funniest thing though was...as I was going back to my van with the last bits of equipment, Mr Idiot was chundering allover the place. I walked past and chuckled to myself.

Thanks mate.
I thought twice about posting about the event because I didn't want the usual comments of being aggressive coming out (they probably will now)...Thing is, I wasn't aggressive at all until the very last moment when the guy pushed me right near the end and that's when I had a word in his ear and no'one else knew any different. Thinking back on it, it was a very, very good night and that little incident doesn't bother me. Thinking of the worst case scenario though....IF the speaker and stand had gone over, well it may have been a totally different story. Depending on the outcome (damage etc), well...I hate to think that I would have had finish what I was doing and spoil the enjoyment of everyone.

Well handled Gary.
If it was me I must admit I would probably have cut the music. Only had to do this a couple of times, I hate doing it but especially near the end of a night of you have had problems all night there is only so much you can take.

Sounds like you handled it well Gary, you come across as a nice guy but also one who sounds able to handle situations like these.

Some gigs have this element arise occasionally and i've got a potential one tonight with a mate's wedding, apparently there has been a bit of history between both sets of families but hopefully the night will run smoothly.
