The Ipod Classic 120GB has been loaded in the usual way with 320kbps Audio Files. I enabled the "normalise" volumes on all tracks, option.

The Volume limit is set to maximum, and the volume is on maximum. I have even run it through My hifi system (Sharp XLMP150E), which still hasn't seemed to solve the problem.

When each track finishes, I can hear a hiss through the earphones, and the hifi is set to Volume 25. It goes upto 30.

The Headphone output volume is generally quiet.

I have found out that the hissing was because the plug wasn't in fully.

to confirm Callum :
The headphones volume is extremely quiet

I have Reset the settings, and the volume issue is solved.

It doesn't go as loud as I want it to, but not too far off

My iPhone's iPod program settings have a "Volume Limit On/Off" slider, presumably defaulting to "On" to avoid lawsuits for hearing loss.

Wonder if yours has similar?

I occasionally connect mine to my mixer to play the odd downloaded request on the night and have no issues with the headphone jack feeding a line-ish signal... in fact I have to turn the volume back to about 75% to avoid clipping.

And I can't believe you felt the need to comment on it at this late stage!
