Got this annoying problem,

Couple of weeks ago, I bought a new laptop, HP G70 213, running vista.

Problem is, it never connects properly to my router on the first attempt.

Usually I have connect and disconnect 5 to 10 times until it connects properly.

And also once it has connected properly, theres a good chance it will lose the connection, and i have to do that connecting routine again.

Although, quite often it will stay connected for a few hours.

Now, the reason I use the word "properly", it because it always "connects", and stays connected, Its just that it wont access any websites even though it says "connected, local and internet" if you see what i mean.

Put another way, when it says "connected", I have to try to open a webpage to see if it actually is...

The router works fine with my wifes laptop, she never has any probs, also work with my iphone OK,

Its a BT Voyager 2110 by the way, had it for a couple of years, always works ok with other pcs, it just this new lappy that it seems to have a problem with,

Also signal strength isnt the problem as its in the same room,

So any ideas chaps ???

Did you try updating the firmware as I suggested before Jeff?

jeff wood

Sounds daft but im guessing you have installed the drivers for the modem, also make sure ay firewalls etc are permitted to let you view certain sites as when i had my desktop i had a similar issue and i found out it was my firewall ( on vista ), ill have another think and let you know if i can think of anything else

Cheers Dave

dont think i have to install any drivers for the modem ???

and yes, tried turning off windows firewall, and the firewall / anti virus ( its got Norton installed by the way )

also to add to this,,,,

when i took this laptop to my res, it connected to their wifi without any hassles..

so its an odd one !

jeff wood

jeff wood
13-10-2009, 05:00 PM
well, another thing i could do, is re install windows,, but install XP instead of vista..

that might help things too ??

XP is soon to be not supported no security updates and such. I would stick with vista and remove Norton.

Just uninstall everything to do with Symantics and Norton. You might need a couple of restarts but you should be able to get rid of it that way.

I'd only recommend reinstalling as a last option.

jeff wood
13-10-2009, 06:25 PM
ok, i'll give that a try,,

what anti virus do you guys recommend ?

kaspersky perhaps ???

jeff wood
13-10-2009, 09:15 PM
oh right

well i just googled for some info on XP, and it seems that it will be supported until 2014,,

so i think i will re install,,

its not that much hassle really..

well, i'll use a new HD just in case anything goes wrong re drivers and i have to go back to vista..

ps,, just now its taken about 20 attempts to connect properly,,,

If you have Vista, why don't you just re-install Vista? Norton isn't part of Vista.

jeff wood
13-10-2009, 09:31 PM
because everyone seems to think that XP is better than vista,,,

so if im gonna reinstall, im thinking might aswell install xp...

What a daft thing to say. With so little information to go on how can you possibly be so sure of this?

You call 2014 (http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-gb&x=16&y=12&C2=1173) soon?

1) make sure router firmware is up-to-date

2) make sure wireless driver on laptop is up-to-date

3) try different channels - log into 192.168.1.1 and see http://www.newnet.co.uk/onlinehelp/bt-voyager-2110.php for where this setting is (your username and password will be different). Try changing to 11 if it's not already (it might be 3).

4) if still no joy, turn off any firewalls and try again.

To be honest I personally think (3) has the best chance of working, although if the wireless driver was needing an update then you might be lucky!

So was it just the wireless drivers that were the problem?

I have uninstalled Norton, but how do I know if its completely gone ?

Run the Norton Removal Tool to make sure it's completely gone - http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Is there anything I should do or check before I install another Anti Virus prog ?

An Anti-Virus - Avast, AVG, take your pick....
Windows Updates
Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/
MalwareBytes Anti Malware - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
