Had something of a good Ebay bargain! Originally got THIS (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9728971098&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2F search.dll%3Fcgiurl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fcgi.ebay. co.uk%252Fws%252F%26fkr%3D1%26from%3DR8%26satitle% 3D9728971098%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1). when I got there to pick it up this evening, the guy just kept piling stuff into may car until his hallway was clear!

Ended up with: 2 x 8U rackmount flight cases (1 ABS, 1 custom in ply and aluminium), Laney Theatre 100w 4-channel PA / mixer amp, JVC twin cassette deck with Denon rackmount adapter...

...then another wooden flight case with an old British 4-channel mixer amp (O.M.B.), power output unknown, and a space up top in the case which would take the tape deck (could pair those two and punt 'em out to aerobics instructors etc), various cables + 2 speaker leads on winders...and finally a HH S500D power amp! :teeth:

Will be keeping most of it, selling on some (probably one of the cases and the amp/tape deck combo)...

...but definitely keeping the HH if it all works OK - so! Anyone know about the HH S500D? Late 70's amp I think, massively heavy and made of Indestructanium, as far as I can tell it's 500 a channel = 1kW peak, which would give maybe 250w rms into 4 Ohms... anyone know any more? Anyone got some bins going cheap...?

http://www.majelectronic.co.uk/ - check these guys out, they service and deal with HH enquiries since the companies aquisition by Laney.

I believe they have wiring diagrams etc for all old HH stuff so I'm sure they'll be able to clue you in on power ratings etc.

Hope this helps!

Might be interested in the 8u flight case if your flogging it.

if it's an amp, the clue is usually in the name. as it's a S500D i'd estimate it's a 500w amp.

sometimes they do muck about with model numbers for amps... though for example it may have "250" in the model name.. this may be 2x50w RMS, 2x50w peak or perhaps 2x250w peak or just a straight 250w peak - 2x125w (which is the obvious choice) or it may be that "2" refers to 2 output channels & "50" means 5, 50, 500 or even 5000w watts power.

Nice one wolfie very nice amps the early HH rangewere built to be dropped think you'll find that it is a 500watt each side as use to use the S250D for mobiles over 20 years ago what an excellent old war horse you have found

I believe DJ Badger is correct having raised this question today at work.

As a side note of interest - we pulled 6 HH amps out of a nexum venue last month, all still "working" - which is a testament to their durability. Been used since the day the night club opened until now!

I own the HH 100watt Mixer PA Amp ---MA 100 I think it was called.

Still use it for low volume bookings as a mixer and as a back up as well.

Never had a problem, must be 25 -30 years old--- magic.

Might be interested in the 8u flight case if your flogging it.Yep got that clear and ready to go already - it's an SKB ABS / aluminium (like THIS ONE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-ABS-8U-RACK-FLIGHT-CASE-FOR-AMPLIFIER-FX-UNITS-ETC_W0QQitemZ7418029286QQcategoryZ15198QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem) )

New price on Ebay = £63 plus postage --- it's got one or two 'been used' scuffs but is otherwise 100% with all screws and fittings, so make it half money plus around a tenner for postage & packing - yours for £40... PayPal accepted!

"...The S500-D delivers 340W RMS into 4 Ohms - per channel. I would not recommend running it into anything less than 4 Ohms.

The stereo/mono switch allows the amplifier to be run in mono (bridge) mode,
which then gives 900W RMS into 5 Ohms..."

So. 340w RMS = 680w peak x 2 = 1.3k into 4 Ohms. So why on earth did they call it a 500?!?!?

Now to look for some 4 Ohm bass bins... :teeth:

probably because 500w is the optimum running power. yes it may kick out over 600w but it probably won't like to do that for long periods of time

no need.

if you bi-wire your speakers, so you have one lead to your subs from your amp & a lead going from the sub to the top, this should drop the power down to 4ohms, although your subs are probably 8ohms, they will have only 4ohms hitting the back of them

Hmm might work - me tops are 8Ohm - leaving the 2.2kW amp into the Peavey 15"s as Mid Tops... must sell some stuff first to pay for the subs though! (Furiously posting on Ebay tonight) :lightning

Postscript - linked it into my Idex 12"s (8 Ohm) last night, it went 7 hours without missing a beat!

HH S500d is from 1970s and rated at 500watts per channel into 2 ohms but never run it into 2 ohms unless you want to set light to your drive units! (i;ve seen it happen) very powerful amp, very reliable but dont clip it cos it aint gonna like it cos very little protection, by the way the fans only work when the unit gets hot so dont think they dont work

Wow! I didn't think this thread would ver see the light of day again! :D :D

Colin: may I suggest that you start a thread in the 'Newbies' section to tell us a bit about yourself andn indroduce yourself to the rest of the forum members? :) :)

are you certain about that Colin?

I thought HH's model numbering convention was always the summed RMS value of each channel at 4 ohms, ie. the V800 was 2x400 at 4ohms, the V500 was 2x250 at 4ohms etc. then there was that V150-L mono 150wrms at 4ohm jobbie

I thought the S500D followed the same convention, also wasn't aware of them rating their amps at 2ohms. I agree with you, I wouldn't try it (other tham to fry an egg or warm a cuppa on the casing), the V800s got rather ummm, warm :) running flat out, fantastic technology though, built to last.

And my 100 watt HH MA 100 mixer amp is STILL gigging.

I agree with Tony -I thought the model number was the TOTAL output.
