Hi,

I am currently improving our website and have just reached the page we call 'Music'. At the moment this page is almost pointless and was therefore wondering what details people put on their similar pages...

I will ofcourse put a little paragraph sumarising our collection but are there any ways of allowing customers to search our music library (all of which is now uploaded and in mp3 format except for a collection of vinyls) and see more exact details?

Any comments or advice appreciated. If anyone knows any good programs/html scripts that could help it would be great!

i'm just working on a system to put my entire music catalogue on my site.. with alphabetic listings & seperate pages for each letter ofth alphabet.. think i have it done but not quite, still some work to do.... only 8000 or so tracks on there at the moment... 2 CD cases (which i can Rip into MP3's & ID3 Tag from Gracenote then delete) & truckload of vinyl (if i decide to include all my old vinyl) to go befoer i have all my music on there.

you could always try DJ inteligence.

Obviously not a new idea--(im not doing a lot of Disco work) I have a Playlist of several thousand songs to scroll through plus a specialist Country Music Playlist on my site--

I can see Rice cringing now :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

I'd also be interested to know about this.

Some of my clients ask for my full index...and I either email it or print off a paper copy & send it by snail mail.

For those with your full music index on your site, what percentage of people viewing your site actually look at it?

Any one asks me for requests I will do my best to find them for the client before the night if I dont have them already, but most nights I do not need a list than more than 25 of their personal tunes for any night the rest of the night is down to there personal tastes and party tunes you hear at most events, customers guests like hearing there requests as well unless dictated not to be played by clients whom booked you

I do not feel potential clients need to see your full catalogue of tunes upon your website as it completely destroys the point of your job being ther to entertain a whole crowd of the clients guests

By all means put the most requested tunes of most nights in every year you play music IE: a top 50 tunes of that year

I was tempted to put excel file of my database available on my website to download. They can then either go through it or find what they like.

As I keep all my requests logged, I am probably going to add a list of my top 100 requests for this year as well

My philosophy on this one for clients is - 'If I haven't got it, I can get it for you!' - for a £200+ booking, I am happy to spend a few ££ on downloads or a CD off Ebay...

For ultra-rare stuff (i.e. next month I have a wedding, the groom is French so they want vintage French music through the meal) they usually have it themselves on CD and are quite happy to bring it along if I get totally stumped for getting it myself.

Having read the comments so far & thought about this, I don't think it's necessary to have your full index on your website.

Most of our requests will be for pretty common stuff, and as already mentioned, if we don't have some tunes on a clients list, I'm sure most of us will just get hold of them anyway.

Therefore, having your index online is pretty meaningless really, as any songs NOT on there can be obtained by us if the client wants them.

I DO however think that a "top 100 requests list" is helpful for the client as WELL as us, partly as it gives them ideas if they have a mental block about what music to choose for their event, and partly because they are more likely to choose some of the songs from this list...and as these are popular songs which work well, it can help make for a better evening.

I always send clients my "top 120 requests list" with my music request form, and find that as well as completing the request form, they often also return the top requests list - with a number of songs they want circled, so it definately helps to steer them in the right direction...but without saying "You WILL have this music"

I know there are many DJs who only play what THEY like, and not what the clients have asked for, but I go out of my way to play what the client wants. This year, I've had many weddings with 20 or 30 pre-requested songs...ALL of which I've played.

If my clients don't hear all of their requests, most of the time it's simply due to time constraints.

Fair comment, Steve...although it still gives them a pretty good idea.

Even if you don't constantly update the list to include the latest stuff, I don't think it matters that much, as in my case less than 5% of what I play is current anyway.

That's probably because most of the music these days is :Rob James: anyway...or maybe I'm just getting OLD!

if your music is on mp3, then using a program like directory lister would create a text or html page, if text file then you could create a database with this the ingrediants for it :)

Although im not a standard DJ I have on my sites the following---

Basic Music Playlist

Country Specialist Playlist

Wedding/Party Playlist subdivided into---
Wedding First Dance
Wedding or Party Disco menu 1 ( newer tracks)
Wedding or Party Disco menu 2 (old and new)
Floorfillers ( old and new )

I do a small amout of Weddings and Parties throughout the year and certainly for those kind of customers it is used a lot--

A lady customer came along to my gig Saturday Night to check out the show (eat your heart out Rice) and during the chat after the gig where we discussed her music requirements she said she liked the listings and was keen to choose her own playlist---her friend said--do you mean we can actually give you our own playlist-we like 80s music

OH YES PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apart from wanting that plus a Country Disco, Line Dancing and a bit of Irish Dancing they didnt really want a lot--I really must put my prices up:D

So the answer is Rob--copy and paste mine for starters :D :D :D

I say to clients---surf the playlist and give me your choices--most times they love it--its just on Sunday im doing a late notice and they have told me to play whats been going down well at other Weddings--so ill just take along the printed off playlists from the last three Weddings( which went down really well ) and use that.

So there are advantages to being organised and having these things in place.

A lot of my customers seem to relate to listed tracks and often say---oh I see youve got lots of ------------------just what we want etc

I operate the "Your Choice" method where we invite clients to select in advance.

You may well be amazed at how successful this has been for me ---

It just makes the evening fly by--because your always playing something they LIKE. I know you have to weed out the "stupid" play lists requests.

I know a lot of DJs prefer not to do this and thats fine--

Im looking for solutions to create the best Customer satisfaction and for me personally its worked brilliantly--to make the service more personal though--
I dont use the most requested tracks approach--simply a menu approach.

Probably not a lot of difference but I think that takes away the personal touch because then the clients Wedding is just "another Wedding" for you to play the same old music at---

That is definitely NOT the message im putting across--every B and G I talk to or communicate with wants something different for their Wedding--the fact that you and I probably play the same old tracks year in year out makes no difference--the B and G want to have chosen them personally BECAUSE its their special day.
