How do you start a function off?

Do you gradually turn the music up, or do you start with an impact start, eg: going from background to loud.

DO you introduce yourself when you start, and when do you put your lighting rig on?

Let's be having you then... :)

i usually play the background stuff, then bang all of a sudden i start my intro and usually start with either celebration/congratulations/happy birthday/dancing queen or got my mind set on you - unless its a specialist show such as dance or rock etc

It depends on the situation.

Weddings:
Background music to set the mood, I always let the Bride dictate when she is completely ready to start her 1st dance. Once the first dance (and follow up) is out of the way it's full on party mode.

Parties:
A short spell of background music (15 mins approx) then right into party gear.

Youth parties:
High energy party mode from the start

Normally I don't introduce myself using the company name. I'll introduce just using my first name "Hi, my names Shaun, I'd like to welcome you all along to ________'s party/wedding tonight..etc". I'll only mention the company name right at the end of the night when it's likely to be fresh in their heads when they're leaving.

Lights:
I set the mood with lighting right from the start of the background music. I've programmed some nice gentle sweeping scans with the 'moving heads' to create a nice ambience and set the mood. I turn up the energy of the lights at the same time I up the tempo of the party.

my lightening at the moment consists of two fx and a centre box, but when required i hire the rest a full set up. I know i need to buy some but at this stage i need to get money in first before i can do that :( sometimes i wish i hadn't bothered setting up business lol

I could do? And I might, as they sound a little cheesy! And they also have my old disco name on them! :)

If you must use strobes, get some warning signs made and laminated to mount on the entrance to the venue at every show.

Anyway, back on topic...

Background music --> 3 / 4 good cover versions--> something lively

In terms of lighting during background (depending on what I have used), usually a static state of 2 nice colours, perhaps purple and congo blue (AKA poor man's UV) to creat a nice 'mood'.

always give them 1/2 hr to 1 hr warm up music if starting at 7.30 "no one turns up at most parties" till about 8.30 in most events (weddings excused). The start of buy useual greetings from me and the hirer and start of with light party stuff of various genres

Hi Ian,

What does the health and safety info comprise of?.

This is something I've never done....which is why I'm curious to what info you you provide during the intros.

Cheers. :)

Started with a bang tonight! Played the first dance on a chnnel that had previously had a track that was recorded very quietly on it & forgot to pull the volume back down. :omg:

B&G visibly jumped, but the three of us made a good recovery. :teeth:
