Just wondering how others keep upto date with the music. Me being an old boy(not as old as others though). I like listening to talk radio during the day, thus miss out on the music.

I tend to use the Radio 1 website, the chart singles website and listen to radio ocassionally.

But how do you know if there is a big hit out, without hearing it on the Radio. I look at the chart on the internet, but as we all know. A number one is not always a good tune(shadupa ya face)

I listen to it first- there's loads of sites that give you a 30 second clip to listen to, and then make a judgement whether I will use it or not.

Of course you can't be right all the time, but as the cost of a single track is relatively cheap it doesn't matter that much.

After 20 odd years, I do also have quite a good 'feel' for a track too.

I also check playlists, and download charts to see what people might be listening to or buying.

The biggest problem I find around here is that the radio promotes pre-release stuff very heavily. It's particularly aparant with younger parties who listen to what's called "Vibe FM" in the east - they seem to have the "commercial" dance music scene fairly well sown up over here, so if you don't listen to Vibe, it really is very difficult to do the younger gigs around here.

I DJ on an International Cover basis, the mobile stuff is for UK work only plus in this day and age I find having the world dance chart more effective, what with MTV and all the others TV Music channels about now even a world rock chart helps on this level and I DJ around Cambridge colleges as well you'll be supprise how multi-cultural it is for music....

If you do younger (student / club) nights then www.dmcupdate.com is useful at times but you have to choose the wheat from the chaff as it were.

For my dance tracks, its easy to keep upto date by buying the latest clubland albums from the charts as there are normally tracks on there that go on to be big tracks. Only problem is when they are a mixed sometimes you only get about 2 minutes of a good track and lose the intro and outro because of the mix points.
I also find that peoples taste for a good song changes quite quick. I remember when the eamon and frankie songs came out, there was a huge demand for them to be played and they packed the floor, 2 weeks later they would clear the floor.

Afraid I now refuse to buy (in the mix) albums as they like to call them as most are mixed as if by a monkey, very few are actually good. prefer the singles on a album without it being mixed

Yeah but i mean. Tunes like Gnarles barkelyWhich has clared the dancefloor every time I've played it bar one.

My way of keeping up to date was CD:UK & TOTP, that's me screwed then!

I'm going down the same route as Darren now.

I find Gnarls Berkley goes down well now, but it took ages to catch on - its only the youngsters that want anything newish- but I find I don't need to be cutting edge anymore.

Also, there are many tunes which break other countries up to a few months before they break the UK...

Indeed. I've decided to only play it if it's requested now.

I must admit the Gnarls usually fails to get a great response for me and I only play it if asked now. Played waaayyy too much on radio and people got sick of it quickly I think.

Smiley Faces is quite good though! A bit more upbeat.

But then as we know, at most parties and functions people only dance to stuff they know, so personally I don't see the point in wanting to be that upfront.

People that play clubs etc, it might be useful for I suppose.

Find even people at parties around Eastern region are very clued up on the music scene with Kiss FM in the south and vibe covering the rest of anglia. Hence the reason I like doing 40th birthdays & weddings as they make a break from the rest of the DJ work I do.......

Does anyone think that it all depends on your region too tho? I mean i requested for the usual top 10 stuff etc, but up here i do find i get asked for a lot of scottish artists...
