I have been ripping disks for the last few weeks when I have a spare half an hour, in anticipation of my new laptop arriving, (we have decided to take the plunge and go over to a laptop based playout for Karaoke, with ProDub of course). Initially I started using OTS Studio, as it comes free with the OTS AV software we will be using. I noticed that on many tracks there were artifacts on the screen (jumbled up letters, flecks/spots on the screen) even on disks that did not look too scratched.

So, a few people recommended AudioGrabber so I tried that out. It was quicker than OTS Studio, but again, had artifacts on many tracks. I was getting quite frustrated with this and resorted to taking the disks to a local store to get them buffed to reduce the scratches. This helped a bit, but some were just not ripping clear enough to use in a professional environment. After a little research I found that in most good quality standalone Karaoke players, tey have a chip that performs error correction on the tracks as they play, cleaning up any glitches in the graphics, but neither AudioGrabber or OTS Studio do this. I eventually was recommended to try out POWER CD+G Burner. Its $39.99USD, digital download. I had so many tracks that I thought I was going to have to re-buy to make the collection up it was worth a punt.

All I can say is BEST $39.99 I ever spent. It rips CD+G disks real quick, and best of all, performs error correction. I have tracks on disks where you would swear they were deliberately scratched they are that bad, and they have ripped near perfect on this software. I really am chuffed, its saved me a fortune on replacing tracks I thought were useless.

So, if YOU are thinking about going over to laptop/pc based karaoke and have yet to rip your disks, go buy it! Seriously, you will not regret it! I wish I had bought it straight away instead of being stingy and relying on free software!

The other thing to look at is the actual CD/DVD drive you are using to rip the discs....

Certain drives rip perfectly with free software, others not so

At the bottom is a list of drives that can rip CDGs with no problems :)

I purchased a sony CRX drive off ebay for about £4 and it was perfect using audiograbber :)

As has been pointed out before, it doesn't matter what software you buy if the drive you have is not capable of reading RAW/sub-channel data. A CD+G disc has two tracks - one for audio and one for graphics. The graphics are stored in RAW format on the sub-channel of the disc. Most CD drives can only read the audio and will not even notice the graphics. Some versions of Nero has a drive info utility which tells you what your drive can and can't do so I would recommend getting this utility before buying any karaoke software.

The PowerCD+G suite has been around for a long time and has always been highly regarded. However, my personal favourite is this:

CD+GRipper (http://www.tricerasoft.com/karaoke_software/CDG_Ripper_Extraction_Tool.html)

Some download sites offer a free trial of the software so you can check it out before parting with your hard-earned.

with ProDub of course

Why? You don't need Produb for karaoke.

You don't need Produb for karaoke.

Have the rules changed, then?

Yes, i know that... my drive is on the list. Even so, many disks just would not copy without artifacts, no matter what i tried. The software really made the difference!

And yes, to all extents and purposes, if you are a professional business, ripping Karaoke disks to PC, from a collection that covers about 7 different manufacturers, I think a Pro Dub license is probably the best route to go down.
