...............but you still do :D :D

Lets own up to the things we do at a gig, but maybe we shouldn't. This is intended as a bit of fun ;)

I'll go first.

1. Texting - when bored I am now terrible for texting during a gig.

2. Taking shoes off. Don't know why but my feet have started to get really sore, lovely feeling to slip your shoes off - if wearing black socks :)

Sure I will think of more :D

I can't think of anything else really... oh, I used to listen to (proper) music on my headphones rather than listening to whatever I was playing at the time, that was years ago though. Actually, I'm sure I mentioned that in another thread recently too :daft:

Well as the DSB is quite tall and hides a lot of things, I put Sooty And Sweep glove puppets on and do a little show!

Actually do take shoes off sometimes, specially if it's been a long day.

OK I have to ask what's wrong with texting?

Providing you do it discreetly and it doesn't interfere with your DJing then I don't see a problem, nobody knows and no harm done.

I quite often send personal texts during the early part of an event, and then later in the evening I sometimes get texts from the guests asking for a particular request to be played. I should explain that at events I put laminated flyers on stands on each table that introduce me and tell the guests I welcome requests either in person or for those too shy or lazy to come up then you can text me on this number. That has got me so much business because they then have the number of a DJ that they take away with on their phone.

I do use my phone if doing bar/club work mainly to see how the other bars are doing.

Private gigs then no unless it's related to other gigs that my company are performing at.

One thing is chatting up girls. I should milk it abit more but I'm too focused on what I'm doing that I rarely want to talk at length. Plus I'm useless with women lol

Count me in with the shoes off action.

Speaking of internet browsing, on Friday night I had a playlist running while a table magician did his stuff. Behind the raised laptop screen, I was reading a book (Chris Evans' latest), and the magician came over to express his surprise that I wasn't watching porn!!! Apparently, all the DJs he knows in Manchester do that!!

I used to text all of the time at gigs, since getting the iPad, watching Match of the Day was also one of my best ways of passing the time. Oh and a couple of beers if I didnt have to drive the van.

Only time I have taken my shoes off was an 8 hour store promotion for Marks and Spencers.

Another vote for shoes off here.

If i get a text during the evening, i'll answer it, but I don't make a habit of it.

When i used to DJ in a couple of bars years ago, we used to have video screens around the venue, instead of the random visual videos, i'd play a film through the system and route the audio through my headphones, can't remember how many times i watched star wars at that venue.

Mine is coming with me to a 41 club do on Sat (basically round table but older).

I have never let her in the past (or anyone else for that matter) but i have done my back in and
she is starting to do photography so will take a picture of all the couples when they come in.

Its a pet hate of mine like solitaire says do you go to work with your girlfriend at her office or where ever.

No other job is it acceptable..

I do understand when your doing karaoke and she is an ok singer or doing the photography but when they are just stood/sat around I find it looks really unprofessional.

I dont understand they "take the wife as it is the pair of us that run the company together." except for financial reasons tax mitigation etc, and is it profitable to do this after equipment costs does she do her own gigs? or is it 2 Dj's for the price of 1?.

Then you are doing well. :D

Joking aside, if whomever is with you is doing something, then fair enough, but if they are sitting there looking like they are bored out of their brain and that they are married to you, I don't think it's a great thing.

IMO it's another thing that makes us looks like amateurs. Whenever have you seen a plumber, or a doctor, or just about any other profession with their partners or wives at work with them?

I understand the point you make however if you both are performing a service such as one dj and one handles the karaoke etc.. then I really do not see the issue.

If your behind the decks snogging each others face other etc... then that's different.

I know this wouldn't happen in other jobs/industries but then again that's what I love about this job ;)

True and i do agree that a woman just sat there doesnt look good. Same could be said for some male roadies who can at times look like a spare part. Depends on the gig too. There are certain gigs where its not a problem and others is a definate no no

Darren, I'm hoping for your sake that a certain young lady from the North East area of England isn't pointed in the direction of your remarks. I don't rate your chances if she sees what you've posted.

OK, to be serious, as has been remarked above if your roadie of whatever gender, relationship or inclination simply stands/sits there adding nothing at all to the proceedings at all, then they are a liability, and do indeed create a bad impression. :(

If they are constantly involved as PR person, technician, photograper, and general troubleshooter, so that the DJ can get on undisturbed with the task of selecting and playing the music, then that can only be good.

This is one area where generalisation is downright dangerous. There have been times when I have been truly thankful to have Jeanette at my side, though she rarely accompanies me to gigs now, and usually only when she is invited as a guest also. There was one memorable gig where a member of the opposite gender was overawed and enamoured of the Superstar DJ performing at the function, and became somewhat of a hindrance to the efficient fulfillment of my duties. Every so often, when she thought I'd suffered enough, Jeanette would come and rescue me. She found it very amusing. :D :D

And yes, before anyone suggests it, one or two members of the audience at the function, including the young lady who had taken such a shine to me, were indeed suffering from learning difficulties. Lovely people all the same, though. One of these days, I might relate the events of that night. When you turn up at a pub with bullet holes in the windows, it tends to concentrate the mind!!

in responce to a few posts in this thread, my partner comes with me because she is,,,

1, part owner of the business
2, she enjoys it, and doesnt just sit there looking bored
3, helps with all aspects of the job
4, i like spending time with her, even at work

My ex wife never came to a gig, never took any interest in gigs, we spent most weekends apart. Note, shes my 'ex' wife.

Everybody can either choose to take your partner etc or not, its up to you. Ive never had any client or guest mention about her being there.

Why would they though?

Drunk people at gigs tend to highlight things they dont like, ie, that tunes crap, that lights shining in my eye, the musics to loud etc. Im sure in the 10 years we've been together someone would have mentioned if they didnt like the fact that she was there.

Especially at kids parties, shes a great help, she goes out and encourages the kids to dance and join in games.

Even at adult events, its helpfull having a second pair of eyes watching out for drunk people falling about near the gear.

Taking bookings, doing paperwork & setting up the gear is work, but i enjoy DJ'ing, and theres nothing wrong with having your partner around when your enjoying yourself.

Maybe you should invite your wife to come along and help, you never know, you might enjoy her company.

I hate taking the misses, she's a pain in the backside. Gets drunk, lifts her skirt, abuses the male guests. Pukes in the disco bus during the return journey...

Joking aside, I've taken her to one gig when she wasn't a guest. I would not of coped without her, the load in was horrendous (using a very old chain winch with a metal basket as the venue was only accessible via a huge flight of metal stairs)

I agree taking the wife is a no, no - unless she is part of the show :)
