Need some help I have a new hard drive for my laptop and I need to move windows XP onto it , I do have a drivers and utilities disc but not one for XP.
Is there a simple way using an external hard drive or is there someone that lives near Reading that could clone it for :)

This can be done with CloneZilla;
http://clonezilla.org/

Easiest way to get this is via;
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
This will allow you to create a bootable USB stick, that you should be able to boot the Laptop from.

Boot into the live cd, connect a spare USB HDD and get it to create the image, and store it on the USB HDD.

Once done...

Fit the new HDD into the Laptop, keeping the original very safe.
Boot using the USB stick once more, and restore the image from the USB HDD to the internal drive...

Not sure if Windows will complain.... Obviously backup everything to another PC/separate USB HDD/CD/DVD before you do anything.

Resurrecting this thread, Paul, did you manage it OK using that program that Jason linked to?

I will shortly be setting up a new PC and so am also interested in a way of transferring programs from one to the other. (In my case, some programs that were purchased and downloaded - some ages ago, so no discs exist, and I can't find the emailed licence keys for)

After doing a bit of research, I found some apps costing a few pennies, but they appear to be a bit limited. When reading some of the reviews, I found a few people suggesting a free alternative here: http://www.pickmeapp.com/ and am thinking about giving it a go.

Anyone got any experience of it?

I use a prog' named Partition Magic.
It came in very handy when I had a laptop with a small hard drive which I wanted to enlarge.
I used an external hard drive enclosure to temp' store my new (500GB) hard drive.
I connected it to my laptop that had a 60GB hard drive via USB.
I ran the prog' and created a clone of my 60GB HD on my 500GB HD.
Then I powered it all down ,I then installed the 500GB HD in my laptop.
It all behaved as it did before , the only difference was the capacity of the new HD in my laptop.
Because the new HD is a clone , there were/are no issues with the new HD.
