So those of you that digital DJ with your custom media PC's or laptops... How many out there use an internal HDD on their laptop, and if so what is the capacity ?

"I currently use an internal HDD at 500GB (2.5 Sata) on my laptop"

Understandably more HDD space can be used on a media based PC, but how many use an external HDD ?

I would like to upgrade again, and maybe go for either a 640GB or a 1TB internal 2.5 sata HDD... Is anyone out there using this kind of HDD in their laptop ?

5400RPM or 7200RPM ?

Thank you

Glenski

Most of my music is 320k mp3 or high bitrate VBR which takes up about 35gb.
There are a few holes in my collection but I can handle 90% of requests and the 10% tend to be obscure or unsuitable anyhow so I dobt worry too much.

My laptop has a 160gb partition on the internal for music so plenty of room for expansion

I do have a lot more music but I am reasonably choosy about what I take out to dj (ie I don't take entire albums when there were only 2 decent singles from it)

I also periodically purge what I take out as some of it is no longer popular and has not/will not get played.
It makes to good tracks easier to find.

Yes, i'm just in the process of ripping some of my older cd collections and looking at having them in the mp3 320 vbr format, but i have considered ripping to wav files for some of them !! undecided yet.

Obviously i would need at least a 640GB 2.5 internal to get a good amount of higher quality files, especially wav ones.

Thank you

I would be on those sizes if i had continued with WAV - but half way though I moved to 320 kbps MP3s so now adds up to around 190gb = close to 12,000 tracks. Capacity is 250gb so enough room to operate.

I'm in a similar position. I use 320kbps MP3's and have about 16,000 tracks in just over 100Gb. My laptop has a 250gb internal drive, so at present I'm using this. If it fills, a 500Gb or 1Tb drive isn't a huge amount of money...

In answer to the OP though, if you're going to replace your laptop HDD, go for a 7200rpm drive as you will get much higher data throughput rates. Actually not a massive deal for DJ'ing (as even with 2 high bitrate WAV tracks playing a 5400rpm drive will cope), but it'll make your laptop startup a bit quicker and a bit more responsive overall. The trade off is power... 7400rpm drives draw more power and kick out more heat than a 5400rpm equivalent - something to consider if you use it on battery for extended periods.

I have just considered also to change my current HDD to a Seagate 500GB Momentus 7200.4 2.5" SATA-300 7200rpm 16MB... and stay away from a 1TB drive for now.

Dabs are doing them for a reasonable price to :)

I do use a Seagate 1TB external drive for my backups though, which i'm very happy with.

Thank you

I use an external 500gb for my cortex and a 1tb for my back ups
