Why don't you just buy one , for about £140.00 you save all that time, you get a control box ,Carry case and you know it's going to look professional and work.

callum, you will need a resistor in the led circuit to reduce the voltage for the leds so they don't blow up!!

390r resistor would be fine. I will mail you the diagram!

Might as well get xmas lights if your going to make it, would that work if you had small bulbs? Just twist the wires around and cover both sides, maybe make some kind of holders? I'd be interested to know! I'd be wary about the fire hazard with red hot bulbs :)

Maybe not then...LOL

Callum,

Your project is easily done, even if you want to DMX your own cloth....it's easy (providing you know what your doing :teeth:)!

may I suggest you don't buy from Maplin, buy from Rapid (www.rapidelectronics.co.uk). They have much cheaper prices, and offer same day desptach (if ordered before 8pm) as standard.

I also suggest you use white LEDs, red/green/yellow will look crap :teeth: and blue are probably a bit too expensive.

As soundlad said, your going to need a ressistor (either on each LED, or on sets of LEDs) to stop them blowing up. I use 390Ohm ressistors when working with LEDs (my car is kitted out with over 75 of them).

If you then want to DMX sections of them, you should look at this (http://www.hoelscher-hi.de/hendrik/english/led.htm) and buy all the bits, and attempt to make the whole thing DMX.

Answer me this question: Which leg on the LED is the positive leg, and how do you know this?

If you can't answer that without looking it up, give up - go and buy one.

To answer the question earlier about what the 555 chip is doing. The 555 ic chip is the timer chip used to make led's flash (it is used in lots of things a very veratile chip) the whol curcuit is just a flasher unit and the output doesnt look hig henough for a whole starcloth.

Can an electrical buff please tell me how this works???
Basically callum you need to buy the 555 timer (micro chip) The output from the 555 is two little to power a buzzer etc... so you need wats called a transistor. It turns the current on at the base of it a 0.4v (it comes from pin 3 out of the 555. so you will need to put 120 leds along the 12v track and the - pin on the Leds needs to go into the 'emmitor' pin on the transistor. the the 3rd pin goes to 0v (collector) All the 555 circuit does is makes a currnt pulse. To change the speed of the pulse you need to chenge the value of the resistor. either a bigger value to slow the pulse down or smaller to speed it up.

hope this helps you!

This is bringing back some teenage nightmares - although I quite expect no notice to be taken of this whatsoever, I will tell the tale...

14 years old, just started putting together disco gear. Bought a sound to light kit from Maplin (well I was 14). Soldered up and placed in a fresh washed up ice cream box. Disco went well for the first 10 mins, then there was a flash, poping noise and a plume of smoke - and obviously no more flashing lights!

I have read this thread with interest. Home made is fine, but home electronics for a professional show, soldering iron and all, is more than crazy - here speaks one with experiance!

Advantage of low current stuff like this, is it it relatively harmless even if you made a mistake. 600ma not likely to cause much more than a small spark. But be aware that low voltage transformers dont have fuses to check continuity on your curcuit with a mutimeter before connecting.
