Looking for a hard Drive to use with a media controller .... Must be AC Powered , fairly small , light and compact not really bothered too much about capacity but at least 300GB ... Anyone any ideas where I can get my hands on something that meets this spec?

There are quite a few available from PC world or internet i use a Omega but they tend to be quite large ,you can use a non powered type then just add a mains powered USB hub.

I use a very small compact 300 gig usb hard drive on my Numark D2 with a 64gig flash drive as back up both work very well.
I did once use an AC powered hard drive on the D2 and had some very strange noises coming through.

What's the make and model ..... I've been looking at a few but most say they are usb powered and don't say if you can power them direct from the mains.

Lacie Ruggeds with the orange rubber are usually quite bombproof.

I should have put I use a usb powered compact hard drive to avoid any confusion.

If it helps I just purchased one of these from Novatech

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-external/harddriveenclosures/usb2.0external3.5enclosure.html

with one of these:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/sata500gbto750gb/st500dm002.html

put them together and have partitioned the hard drive for use with My DDS. Very simple to put together and turned out cheaper than buying one already made, it is definably AC powered aswell.

If its not a silly question.... why didnt you spend £3 more and get this http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-external/harddriveenclosures/usb3.0external3.5enclosure.html

Its backwards compatible with USB2 but if you have or get a laptop with USB3 your transfer speed will increase from 480M to 5G

No it's not a silly question but at the moment the PC only has USB 2.0 I do supppse that fowardly thinking I should have gone for usb 3.0 for when I eventually upgrade the PC. And I also didn't realise it was backwards compatible, D'oh!

If you can go SSD, these will take far, far less power and so don't need an external power supply.

Prices of SSD's are now pretty good. I've got a 250GB SSD for music, it was around £150 from PC world (bare drive, I had to mount inside a caddy).

Something to consider..?

I've heard good things about the new solid state hard drives being more reliable in the long term as they (if i recall) have no moving parts. Has anyone tried one yet?
