I am in the market for a new amp and would appreciate some assistance in choosing it.

I run Cerwin Vega speakers, the prostax system, a pair of PSX-153's 600 watt and 8 ohms plus a pair of 15" sub wooooooofers PSX-36's 500 watt and 8 ohms.

So come on guys and gals help me out, I'm not techy so don't baffle me with science and stuff. My budget - £400 or I'd push the boat out to £500 if I was persuaded it would be worth it.

Silly question here, does a better quality amp give a better sound? In other words if you have two amps that are sufficiently powerful enough to power the speakers, would amp 'A' give a better sound than amp 'B' if it was 'top of the range' compared to a cheaper model.

Oh yeh I wouldn't buy off e-bay, sorry but I don't trust it for spending this much of my hard earned English.

Yes, you will notice a big difference in sound between a budget and pro amplifier.

A good all round amp is the QSC RMX2450.

Or, you could go for the Void Basys amp, which has 3 channels (2 for stereo tops, single mono bass) with built in crossovers and limiters. This offers the same benefits as seperate active crossovers, increased headroom, more efficiency etc. I use the full Basys system myself (with the matching Void speakers), but a guy I know has purchased the amp alone to run his Behringer speakers, and he is amazed with the improvement from his old amp. Void are now offering a 3 year warranty, which can only be good.

This seems like a bargain, from last weeks CPC catalouge

Actually, i can't find anywhere that tells you if that is the rating into 8 or 4ohms.. may even be 2, in which case it wouldn't be such a bargain.

And yes, more expensive amps will sound better.

Also, you'll get a much better increase in performance from using separate amps for the subs and the tops with an active crossover, makes it much easier to get a balanced sound. So might be worth hanging onto the amp you've got as well.

hello
i used to run my cerwin vega speakers through one amp, but then i decided to change and run the bass and tops on seperate amps and both amps our just above the speakers handling capacity, the difference in sound quality is crazy.i will never run them on one amp again.:)

the better the amp the clearer the signal sent to the speakers

Personally I'd rather have that Nexus one.. 7kg!!! Hopefully its 750w into 4ohms and not 2, else i wouldn't bother (if its into 8ohms then even better!)

Whoops.. just realised the link doesn't work.

Did you use a crossover?

To do what you suggest would mean me buying two amps, then keeping my current amp as a spare which means ££££££££££'s. Could I get two for £500?

i do use a crossover.

i only bought one more amp, my old amp was 1200 matrix
and the other is a 2600 peavey amp ( approx £399)
the 1200 matrix amp runs the tops,
2600 runs the bass
if one amp should go down then i could still manage to carry on with the one amp, i know it works this way becouse at the weekend i had one amp lose a channel, why i dont know, but its being repaired.

another option is to run all the speakers through i think its the peavey c54000
i have had this run my speakers for one night and they sounded great, the cost of this amp i think was just under £500.
i saw this amp in dsc in dunstable.

The Behringer CX2310 crossover is only £60. Most people including myself seem to use these.
