Coalville 2017, an Old Git's thoughts.

Hugely disappointed. :(:( Why? Because of the effort put in by folk like James H, only to see probably the smallest numbers of listeners ever.

A chance to hear over twenty different rigs of every size from two Maui 5s to rigs over 5K!! Free entry, pub adjoining, rooms available if you want to stay over, and a chance to meet folk from hundreds of miles away that you may only see at BPM, other than here.

You don't have to be in the market for new cabs to go there, it's well worth it for the social aspect alone. It's always educational, equipment wise. Anyway, enough of this rant, what did they sound like?

Seven " stick " rigs at the front, Maui5, C Ray, CS1000, RCF Evox 8, an offering from Db I think, a Curv and others. My Mauis were up first , and in my ( humble and biased ) opinion, they were outgunned by the others, but not outclassed. When they were fired up, I thought it was a larger rig, we got quite a bit out of them. After some exhaustive A-B testing, I'd put the Evox 8s as the ones to beat, but in all honesty, the gap quality wise from top to bottom is minimal, very minimal.

Subs and tops? Nothing really impressed, whatever the badge on the front, apart from Barry's B52 rig, which just did exactly what it says on the tin, effortlessly. All a little bass heavy, and woolly/muddy in the top, with a big hole in the middle. Shame Wayne couldn't get his Yamahas here, or Allan his much vaunted/maligned Denons.

Single boxes? Db Opera, by a mile. Very impressive, even eclipsing Yamahas for me, and that's unusual.

Big ones? Well one of the rigs with a single sub sounded acceptable enough at first, but when we took the sub off, I walked out!! Not nice. :(
A whacking great RCF rig with 18" subs and 10" tops worked absolutely fine, but was shaded by a six box Db rig.
James H had a " tasteful " Mitus rig at the back, which I think was using about 7K of power!!!! Good job he left the other half in the van, I feel. :D:D

All in all, a lot of folk put a lot of work in, two lads from North of me had a 350 mile round trip!! James and other folk do a lot of work to bring this together, and it's a crying shame to see it not appreciated. :mad:

I feel the pain, having organised a DJ event in Exeter which featured manufucturers and an entire day of demos and free food/beer etc, only 6 people came all day, despite having been crying out for something in the area.

I was planning on being there as you know, but needs must and Jan/Feb this year have been diabolical, so entertaining 6 year olds for a couple of hours won the day unfortunately, plus a meeting with a couple about their upcoming wedding (which is going to be something completely different from the "norm" ;) ). 90 minutes up the A14 after that little lot just wasn't going to happen.

I'm not in the market for new PA at the moment (especially with the current trend of FBT being forced down everyone's necks) - what I've got suits my needs perfectly. But it would have been nice to catch up with everyone especially since I won't make BPM this year either.

You WILL one day hear the Yammy 8's & 12's. Whether you'll be impressed or not....I don't know. They suit my needs for most of the weddings etc. I do where ear-splitting volume and seismic bass isn't necessarily the order of the day.

Sorry Peter. I was all set for going but had it in my mind that it was next Sunday and unfortunately didn't realise my error until it was too late to go. I was looking forward to putting the Denons up for scrutiny and was planning to take my pair of Db Technologies ES602s to see how they stand up against the Mauis and other similar systems.

Coalville this year fell on the weekend we were having faaaaaaaaaaaaaaamleee over. I could've escaped for a while but tomorrow we're all off doing a thing for my daughter's birthday & driving back after a stayover would've been fraught. So no. I wish I could've gone though. And how.

The little soundoff we had up here last year revealed in terms of quality of sound there's not much to separate the big buck boxes from the cheaper ones. Sure there are differences in build & appearance etc but in terms of what they sound like there's not much to tell them apart.

I'm not convinced by the latest fad for sticks & bins. I found the CS1000 system far from compact when I tried to lift one - I'd obviously expected it to be much lighter :lol: Yeah they look nicer in many respects than a conventional top on a tripod (but so does a sack of spuds most of the time) but is it worth paying that much over the odds for a sound of lesser quality than a much cheaper mid/top cab? Nah.

The laws of physics remain unchanged. If you want high SPLs with nice juicy bass you need big, heavy boxes. Nobody's ever come up to me & said "hey Mr DJ your dem speakers is FUGLEE man innit".

Interesting to hear that the Evox 8 won out on the "stick" class.

I am the owner of a pair of Evox 8 - fairly happy but aware of their limitations. Had wondered what difference the CS1000 could bring after all the hype - sounds like it's very negligible, and more down to personal taste rather than there being a significant "improvement" over the Evox 8.

It's a shame there isn't a Coalville down in the south? Equally, we're lucky to have the likes of RSD Music that effectively have a Coalville set up all year round in the showroom, and that was how I originally bought my Evox 8 (I went in thinking the HK Audio Nano 600 was the one for me - but a quick listening session put an end to that!)

You :muppet: There was a Db stick rig on show, and as reported, all were fit for purpose.
I'm booked in for Liversedge, yes, as are others.

The lines are blurring. One of the " compact " rigs had a 12" sub!!! How is that compact? Blimey, Wayne's ahead of the game here, by just shoving a pair of Yamaha 8s over them, and having a more powerful and versatile rig.

" You cannae change the laws of physics ", as a learned gentleman once said. :) Your customers aren't that discerning then, cos there are some damned ugly cabs on the market. :(

In my heavily biased opinion, the stick rigs where the speakers themselves are the spacers, rather than ugly great extending poles ( effectively making them the subs and tops we've been using forever ) just look sooooo much prettier and capable of blending discreetly into the background, particularly at weddings .

And when we want to rave at the evening bash, we wheel in the big guns, show how big our stack is, and how loud we can make it go. Simples. :)

Surprised at that, as an Evox 8 owner I love the practical aspect of them, but performance wise been unimpressed, although when we had a few stick systems on a little sound off, they did sound good compared to others with, in my opinion, the Bose L1 being the only one to come close - the Bose was a lot louder, but also a lot harsher.

I love my Evox 8 too - for the same reasons as you.

But my next purchase will be a full "big" system that can handle a 500 people large crowd. The Evox 8 is suitable for weddings, but doesn't handle big corporate gigs.

Evox 8 does me fine for the majority of work, but I can't see any benefit in replacing them with something like the CS1000 - I'm better off getting a much bigger system so I can handle different types of events.
