These stands do hold a great deal of weight - we're talking at least 20-30kgs total. The front panels are held with very strong ABS plastic clips.

The consoles actually now come with an optional strut bar that can be used in the middle. This probably would allow you to take off the top shelf without any wobbleyness(sp?).
