I agree, I use Audacity quite a bit for trimming/editing tracks etc.
The mp3 save part is a separate download which is a nuisance but there is a link to it on the Audacity page.

The main thing to remember is to export the file once it has been changed.
Saving just saves the project.

I use Audacity.
It has lots of effects.
It can also lift quiet tracks.
