Saturday's gig was not particularly wonderful. It was a 65th birthday party and to be honest no one was really interested in the disco. There was a mixture of ages from babies to octogenarians but there was a free bar paid for by the birthday boy and that is where people stayed. It was a 7 o'clock start and I played background for the first hour, then the buffet was served at 8 followed by deserts at 8.45. There was a birthday cake and I expected that the birthday boy would cut his cake, we'd sing happy birthday, do toast/speeches and then dance. In the event one of the organizers (son) asked me to liven it up and play some Motown as "everyone wanted to dance". I did and they didnt. Not anyone. At 9.30 I was asked to annouce the cutting of the cake. I invited people to get their cameras ready. Birthday boy came up, picked up the knife, cut the cake and sat down. Hardly anyone strayed from the bar to observe or photograph. We sang "Happy Birthday" and did 3 cheers. A few people called for speech; so I invited him up to say a few words. He remained seated and said that his sone would say something; so I invited him up but he didnt leave the bar; so I carried on. Eventually I got 2 couples up for the Tight Fit "Back to the 60's" and held them on the floor for about half an hour. I had three ladies ask for some 70's disco and they danced for about half an hour. Then at 11.30 the bar shut and for the last half hour I had a full dancefloor for some 80's soul and disco and guess what they didnt want to stop. Tough! The hotel where I work regularly have a strict midnight curfew. They had all evening to dance to a variety of music as specified and including prebooked requests. They just were not interested. Not even requests for music or songs.
Incidentally there was also a table magician called Jamie Raven who was excellent and well appreciated. Thoroughly recommend him.
