Default Does anyone know about DMX-255?

    Hi all,

I just typed in to 'Google' DMX-255 and it brought up my Omega II Scanners.

I couldn't get them to work on my DMX Controller and I think I've cracked it, as it says the Scanners are DMX-255 and my controller is DMX-512.

Should this make a difference though?

I'm knew to DMX, so I am trying to learn it.

    Thanks,

    Scott.
    Scott.

all the 512 stands for is the number of channels available per universe are you sure its not the model number of your fixture

also 255 is the top value per channel hence why it might bring up a lot of results in a google search

I've just started to reuse my Omega scanners after being stored away for a few years.

With these units remember dip switch 10 is invert. so when addressing them be careful not to use dip switch 10.

Just a guess but it may have something to do with the signal sent down the line. DMX as you will probably know is a computer protocol based on RS-485.

For example serial connections have various variables such as baud rate.
Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing.
    It was here first.

    Scott.
A scanner with 5 x DMX channels could be something like this:
CH1 - Shutter (strobe, lamp on, lamp off)
    CH2 - Gobos
    CH3 - Colours
    CH4 - Pan
    CH5 - Tilt

DMX-512.....The number of channels you can control via DMX is 512 (Example: you could control 102 lights that had 5 DMX channels each, 102 x 5 = 510, 2 less than the 512)

DMX-255.....Each of the 512 channels has a 0 - 255 value range (Example: To move a scanner mirror from left to right you need to increase the value of the 'Pan' channel from 0 to 255.)
    Therefore:
0........ would be mirror panned to the left
127.5.. would be mirror to the centre
255..... would be mirror panned to the right

This 0 - 255 value range applies to all 512 DMX channels, on the gobo channel you will normally find that any values between 0 - 10 will select the first gobo, 11 - 20 the next gobo, 21 - 30 the next and so on.....
....same with shutters, colours, dimmers, tilt, pan, focus, gobo rotate etc. etc....

    Hope that's clear enough?
