    Default Starting off the night

How do you start a function off?

Do you gradually turn the music up, or do you start with an impact start, eg: going from background to loud.

DO you introduce yourself when you start, and when do you put your lighting rig on?

    Let's be having you then...

i usually play the background stuff, then bang all of a sudden i start my intro and usually start with either celebration/congratulations/happy birthday/dancing queen or got my mind set on you - unless its a specialist show such as dance or rock etc

    It depends on the situation.

    Weddings:
Background music to set the mood, I always let the Bride dictate when she is completely ready to start her 1st dance. Once the first dance (and follow up) is out of the way it's full on party mode.

    Parties:
A short spell of background music (15 mins approx) then right into party gear.

    Youth parties:
High energy party mode from the start

Normally I don't introduce myself using the company name. I'll introduce just using my first name "Hi, my names Shaun, I'd like to welcome you all along to ________'s party/wedding tonight..etc". I'll only mention the company name right at the end of the night when it's likely to be fresh in their heads when they're leaving.

    Lights:
I set the mood with lighting right from the start of the background music. I've programmed some nice gentle sweeping scans with the 'moving heads' to create a nice ambience and set the mood. I turn up the energy of the lights at the same time I up the tempo of the party.
