Continuous shooting mode would be good, multi mode, used taking pictures in sport, nature, everyday life.
I've seen the Nikon D3000, so not sure if anyone has one or experience of one.

A very 'general' rule is that Canon will give you better results than Nikon, but a Nikon is easier to use.
Personally I think there is very little difference between modern SLR cameras. I use Canon and very pleased with them.
Canon for me 350D model. Nice camera.
Takes a bit of tinkering to get your ISO, Shutter and Aperture balance correct (and still getting to grips with when to use shutter bias and when to use aperture bias), but its a nice camera. Some lovely pictures of our little fella from it.
It does take nice point and click pictures too.

I have the Canon EOS 500D :
1. Controls are better laid out in my opinion
2. Simpler design
Every digital SLR that I know has what you asked for.
I would say that it is like choosing a car, every car has an engine, four wheels and the option of air conditioning, but what one may like, another may dislike.
If you visit the Cameralabs Forum, you can find sample images from most lenses and cameras. Youtube videos also.
Nikon D60.
Good camera for normal shots but very hard to get the right amount of lighting for disco shots.
This is slightly off topic but still relevent to SLR cameras.
Check out this guy.......

Can you play something with a beat ?
I have a Nikon D3000 and a Cannon EOS 500D
I would strongly advise against buying the D3000, i've had nothing but trouble with it. However the Cannon is brilliant, i'd recommend it as a great entry level DSLR, although slightly over your budget.
That has been discontinued, and replaced with the, rather disappointing. D3000
