You can get auto switchers, but i do not recommend thse because of signal 'bleed' confusing the switching unit !!

That would work, Steve.
I use an enhanced scart selector switch which has several different input and output types. Inputs can be scart, RCA, S-Video or VGA and it can output to scart, RCA or S-Video. It has automatic switching which can be over-ridden and switched manually. This gets round the problem of two signals fighting over the automatic selection, a problem which you mentioned earlier. I think I bought it for about £25 from Argos about 6 years and still use it today. At the time it's use was to take an s-video output from the laptop and play it through a tv monitor which it coped with quite well. It meant I could combine karaoke from my stand-alone CD+G player with graphics, animations and video from the laptop and output them to the same source.
I've done a quick search but can't seem to find reference to it online. I'm not at home so I don't have the model number to hand.
