    What's to discuss? It's true.

As long as you are also proficient in the thousand other things that make a good DJ.

Point of order. The thread title asks a different question to the first post. I'm answering the question posed in the post.

Answer to title: No. Not necessarily, but possibly sometimes.

I'd put musical knowledge over Mixing for most gigs.
Play to niche crowds (ie 2hr club set) than a typical mobile DJ, and mixing is expected.

Knowing what to play, when to play it is more important IMO.

Also, knowing the limits of your mixing abilty....

I'm sure the DJ's that never mix (other than crossfade) still get "great night, great DJ" comments at the end of gigs.

I think that you are obviously a better DJ if you can mix, but that doesn't mean you are a bad one ifr you can't, there are plenty of excellent DJs who can't mix and constantlly command very high rates and get lots of referrals for their service.

There will be times when you get a crowd that love to dance at all kinds of events inc. high class Weddings and corp and when that happens it is nice to be able to mix properly and keep the floor flowing...I would say its just another string to your bow but not essential and not as important as many other aspects of the job.

    No. Not necessarily.

Merging tracks can be a very efficient way especially at wedding and older functions.

We haven't defined what 'better' is. But taking everything else as being equal (song choice, customer service etc) a DJ who is able to mix has more skills than a DJ who can't mix. When used appropriately these skills makes the DJ who can mix a better all round DJ than the one who can't.

So in that context - Yes!

What's more important, a 'rocking' sound system with giant bass bins or mixing? Now there's a question!

It depends on what they class as a dj.Is it a club dj where yes beat mixing is essential,or is it a mobile dj like me where mixing is not essential, its how we pick and choose a tune.I do like to mix my tunes, but dont get the opportunity at every gig.
