If your sub does not have a low pass filter sending it a full range signal will waste power and muffle the sound. You need a crossover before your amplifier either a stand alone unit or one that is often built in to a graphics equiliser. The advantage of the graphics is that you send your main LR signal through it to you main speakers and connect the SUb output to your sub. With this set up you can also remove some of the low frequences from your main speakers are these will be handled by sub.

Well said that person. Also, you can balance the relative outputs of subs and tops from your crossover.
