Default Any (preferably free) good software to remove hiss & pops?

I'm ripping some tracks from old vinyl that I can't track down on other media.

A few of them have hiss, pops & crackles on quieter sections. Some sound like a cross between a bowl of rice crispies & bacon frying.

Does anyone know of any good software for removing background noise on vinyl rips?

Like with most audio editing questions, I'd recommend Audacity.

Here is the procedure you're looking for:

And you can download the program here:

Yep - audacity is very good, some neat functions for sample editing.
Alternatively, I used to use GoldWave (commerial, but not expensive).

I've used Polderbits to good effect - it's also good at detecting the inter-track silence on albums so you can walk away and leave a whole side playing.

It's cheap, and IIRC there's a time limited full demo too

soundforge or audacity will do the job to a certain extent, if it's just for mp3's it should be good enough, but the waves ones are the best though imho

    Cheers chaps!

I have Audacity (came with the USB turntable), but didn't know if it was possible with it
