    Can anyone recommend a program for creating animated gifs?
    Preferably easy to use and free

    If you're looking for a fully-featured (but free) image manipulation program that you can also use to create animated gifs, have a look at GIMP

    Yep, just create each 'frame' as a separate layer and them when you save as a gif, you'll get the choice to either merge layers or save as an animated gif.
