Like I've said before, I wouldn't consider returning the blue monkey as this is used to offset any costs incurred for time and expenses for any prep work I've already done.

The problem is, when making initial contact with the client, and they ask what deposit you take, they haven't seen your T&Cs yet so I do think, at times, some explanation is necessary. Some people are not as "term" savvy as we are and need a little extra help understanding things. Any doubt about anything in a client's mind can only be a bad thing.

I can see where people are coming from suggesting that people may see the term "booking fee" as an additional fee on top of the booking cost. Maybe the phrase is not as clear as it could be.
