Does the hum go when the mains cable is removed from the laptop? If it does, you need to get yourself a Ground Loop Isolator - something like this - http://www.djkit.com/qtx-audio/high-...FQfKtAodRgsAGg

I reckon he'll actually need a pair, because each stereo chanel will need one isolator. I like these, because they're easy to lash into a case, or screw to something fixed. Beware simply leaving the round ones just dangling, as sure as eggs is eggs, the wires wil get damaged, and rather than a hum that's merely annoying, you'll lose one or both channels completely!

Thanks for your comments. I was led to believe that the sound card would eliminate the humm, and so was surprised when it did not, hence my post. I had a Behringer DI20 Ultra-DI 2 Channel DI Box/Splitter on hand from an earlier attempt but having connected it as instructed and settings also as should be, it not only eliminated the humm in LIFT mode but it seems to have scrubbed all sound completely!! Am awaiting a response from Behringer Support as to why this should be.
However, the options referred to aren't too prohibitive so I may just follow up and see if they are any better.
Thanks once again.
