That would be extremely unusual for an XLR lead. They should always be Male to Female. The beauty of XLR is that if a lead isnt long enough you just plug two together.
The output of a piece of equipment should always be male and the input female.

Many thanks for the help - unless anyone has any other ideas, I'll order some now from ebay. I guess after spending £1,600 on speakers, I might as well try and get the rest of it right.

Looking through ebay as suggested and finding quite a few variations. Do I need balanced? Does it matter if they're mic cables? and lastly, bearing in mind it's to the 712a speakers, would the ones on the link below be okay please?

Yup, they'll do the job. Buy 'em I might suggest going for 10m cables rather than 5m.
