    Default Vinyl Revival

There's a real surge of popularity in a lot of the upmarket cafe bars around here for vinyl only Dj's. There's a cultural quarter, ( more of an eighth really), that has a handful of trendy bars and a couple have been advertising "Dj's wanted for weekend residencies playing '70's and 80's funk MUST be vinyl only".
A couple of mates of mine are northern Soul DJ's, thats all they play, and the clubs they do have always been vinyl only but it seems this is now seeping down to other genres.
There is an element that do seem to think that unless it's vinyl it's not real Djing ?
I'm undecided, although I have been to a few vinyl northern soul nights and one vinyl rock and roll night and it was refreshingly different to hear no mixing in fact gaps between songs, sometimes silence of up to 30 seconds when the dancefloor stopped, people discussed the song or just chatted and waited in anticipation for the next track ! It was all quite quaint really.
Will it ever catch on ?

Why would there be a gap in between songs of 30 seconds?

The "dj's" were in no rush, there did seem to be a real relaxed atmosphere and I got the impression that the gaps in the music were what the audience wanted something similar to how a live band plays, a chance to chat, have a quick drink then off again.
Also nearly every song was introduced, the artist and title and year

It's never been away - I could point you in the direction of many specialist NS/Mod/Ska type nights and clubs that have been running for years. There's plenty of forums and FB pages devoted to them.

I love mixing with vinyl. (serato and vestax now) but they weigh loads and are bulky. so leave them
at home for most weddings. u can't beat a 12" platter.

I thought of doing that years ago (leaving varying size gaps between records). Glad it's being done. It goes against that unwritten rule that for some reason it has to be continuous. Glad someone is trying it out.

I went to a rockabilly, surf, fifties/sixties type of night recently and the dj only had one deck and it wasn't a technics it was a Dansette ! an old record player from around the time of the dinosaurs !
The player was hooked up to a guitar type amplifier on the floor and the pauses in the music were for as long as the dj took to swap over each 7" single, stop the turntable, remove the arm, take off the record, put back in sleeve, take next record from sleeve, put on turntable, place needle in groove, start turntable, dancing resumes,
The lack of bass or anything aproaching a "modern sound" didn't seem to be a problem as the music was all rock and roll surf type trebley sounding stuff.
It was a refreshing change to see this type of "djing" and a million miles away from the sort of aproach I take,

Funny enough it was around 11 years ago. I remember discussing it with a work mate where I was working at the time.
