Propper DMX cables are higher spec, but 99% of the time a XLR cable will work perfectly well.

I Agree, if i'm short on proper DMX Cables a normal XLR Will do the job. Think DMX cables are more shelded than Audio Cables, but could be wrong

Rather annoyingly, this was the 1% when they didn't work! I used a 10m speaker cable to run across the from of a stage (for mood lighting), and everything after that cable flickered constantly. Swapped the cable, and it all worked.

DMX is 120ohm twisted cable. Mic cable isn't. Ethernet cable would be better than mic cable. Make some XLR to Ethernet sockets and a load of ethernet cable? Just use one of the twisted pairs and the shield.

Speaker XLR are normally only 2 wire. DMX needs 2 signals plus a ground wire so very unlikely to work

Not very unlikely. I've been using them for years without problems.

I uplit a huge barn last year and used XLR speaker cables for long runs and didn't have any problems at all.

I've never heard of a 2 wire XLR ... all mine are 3 wire & 3 pin - are you sure you haven't been misinformed about this?
