This has just reminded me of a convo I had with a mate in a wedding band (a very well regarded one at that) a few weeks back.

He had a gig on so missed the Carl Froch fight. When I asked him how the gig was he said "It was OK but I ended up with the short straw to drive and there was a free bar so I could only have 3 pints over the night."

Apart from the fact Id never even have 1 at a wedding never mind 3, if the designated driver is digging into 3 pints, what are the rest of the band downing? With your average wedding venue pint costing £4+ that's a lot of dough for the band to be tagging onto the bill.

I have done some very well paid bookings in some very nice establishments and not had anything offered yet a low budget village hall booking where they have done the buffet themselves and they've bought plates of food over to me. Not always the case but that's what has happened over the years.
I've not noticed any divide to be honest ... I've done a party where I was asked to sit down at a table for a 3 course meal with the guests, offered champagne and a guest room to sleep for the night so I didn't have to pack away the same night... I've also done ones where they've literally said you're over there, dictated exactly what they specifically wanted and generally treated me like a piece of .
    Both from equally "posh" people.

I used to get really annoyed when people didn't offer me any food when the photographer/other suppliers were - I don't expect it now, so I'm not bothered anymore!
I'd love to see somebody actually enforcing the "I need food provided" rule in their contracts...

"If I'm not fed before the end of pretty green eyes then I will play my very own rendition of delerium's 1999 classic trance track" ... (silence)

I've always said I never go to get food unless asked, but recently I do find I've not been asked. I believe that it s all dependant on the people. I have to confess the last job I did I was bloody starving, having had a busy day with the family didn't get chance to grab a bite before heading out at night. It was a golden wedding and after the lady told me " I don't do dancing" I was faced with a very poor crowd; as it turned out no one else did dancing either! So I broke the rule, sneaked up to the buffet after it had been plundered and scoffed half a small pork pie although I did feel like some urchin from a Dickens novel! As it turned out, the couple thanked me and said the music was great ( 50s 60s 70s)and just the right level.
So still feeling even more guilty, I popped in to McDonald's for a late night snack.
There has been some venues I wouldn't touch the grub, having over heard staff saying it had been out since the morning, sweating away in a hot function room! Mmmmm!

Which in itself is very dodgy and unless they have signed a disclaimer, food can only be left out for 2 hours I believe.

I did a photo booth for a staff celebration day on Wednesday this week and emailed the Hotel to see if it was OK to get something to eat and they asked me to choose off the menu! I had a club sandwich and chips which was very nice. I nearly took a picture and posted it on here for Peter's benefit...

As a rule i don't eat buffet food....seen far to many people coughing all over the table then touching the food!!
Also avoid hog roast due to "greasy cheese burger hands" makes my job hard.....But never really get asked to help myself to food anyway...
But often get asked if i want a drink while i set up,so i say yes but once i am all set up and ready,i never hear back........

Would you believe it, I have 2 weddings at one of my out of town residencies next week and just yesterday I had emails from the customers asking me if there was anything in particular that I'd like to eat.

I still won't though as I don't trust my ever so delicate stomach. It's just not worth chancing it.

    (Sigh) It was ever thus.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone think chewing gum throughout the evening is not professional, i'm not inferring that Neil does this but watching Fergie chew through 90 minutes is a bit off putting.

    I don't think so.
I have chewing gum but I don't make it obvious that I am chewing if that makes sense.
