I agree, two bars will take up too much space in a living room. You should be aiming for one bar (or possibly even freestanding lights) with a handful of fixtures on it.
As for uplighting, a couple of par 36 LED effects would more than do in an average sized living room - 4-6 large pars would come close to daylight
The penguin style lights won't withstand a lot of frequent handling and the 100w lamps on the old Maplin pengiun style fixtures are a nightmare - they have a lifespan measured in weeks. It's best to go for LED across the board if possible for dry hire kit, if only because of the issues with hot lamps in cramped rooms, but also because of the problems of the lights being turned on and off a number of times, sometimes a long time after you've left the area - and the lamps then failing. You then get into the nightmare scenario of having to try and talk the customer through a lamp change over the phone, or returning to change the lamp.

That was just an example. If the space is small then I can take one bar, or even none. The pars I'd use for those things is those budget ones so they aren't super bright. But you can always dim them.
Not adverse to using a simple fixture if it's a nice one.

Revo 3 and a couple of Par 56 should do it
