I was looking at downloading and installing this last night.

But, going to wait for a quiet week before taking the risk.

This is a Beta release available to Pro users only at the moment. It's so Pro users can test it further and report any bugs back to Atomix. The bug list is increasing daily so I certainly wouldn't even contemplate taking this version out on road. If you don't want to be a tester, I'd recommend you wait for the full release.

I'd love to find out whether they've rebuilt the audio engine. It may just be my ears playing tricks but I swear VDJ8 has an improved sound clarity. I'll be interested to hear what others think...

In a post on another forum a point was raised, which may be a major leap forward, or an accident waiting to happen. It was alleged that it might be possible to run VDJ in 4 deck mode, with two soundcards connected to one laptop. Thus, for example, I could connect my VMS as normal, but rather than feeding the two other mixer channels with the output from a soundcard connected to another laptop, I could connect that soundcard to the first laptop, thus losing a laptop. And of course, removing my first backup.

    Thoughts or opinions, anyone?

I Agree looks like despite quite a long period of testing V8 is not quite there.

You can connect two soundcards to V8 but I would say you will still need a backup, just in case your laptop fails.

    Default First Impressions

Just given V8 a quick test run.

    Impressed so far.

All simple to configure. Some regular buttons in different places....

It now features touch screen control. Which I could just about manage but some buttons didn't function as I would expect in that mode.

One thing that amazed me was that when I ended the programme in the middle of a mix it remembered what I was doing and had all the same songs showing when I re-started it. Ideal when the programme crashes for getting back up without too much delay.

I also like how it didn't automatically wipe my search results after I selected a track.

Been trying it on a windows 8 machines but will need to test on a XP before taking on the road.

It plays 24bit studio masters so that has my blessing.

    All the best

Hmmm.... Methinks some work is needed on the Mac version.

After a couple of hours testing last night the MacBook's fan was running heavily, and every time I loaded a track the music on the other track stuttered. Eventually the MacBook froze up. The CPU usage was only showing one bar, so I suspect there's a memory leak somewhere that is cumulative, ultimately leading to a crash. It's an i7 MacBook with 4Gb of RAM, so, a top spec machine that I wouldn't have expected to have these problems. I might stick another 4Gb of RAM in to bring the total to 8Gb, if it still crashes once that's done it's definitely a memory leakage problem.

I'm sending in an error report, hopefully it should be relatively easy to fix. Other than that I quite like the interface and a couple of the bells and whistles. Can't get my NI S4 mixer to work with it though, but that's a project for another day.

    Cheers

VDJ 8 has been built from the ground up - it's a completely new engine. This is one of the reasons that it's taken so long to get to this stage and why extra testing is needed. They've not just tweaked the previous version. Like Peter said, this could be a stroke of genius or a complete disaster (ala Windows Vista from XP). Only time will tell. But Atomix are working on the bugs as they get reported.

A lot of bugs raised on thr VDJ 8 forum relate to the Mac. This is definitely not a finished product for the Mac platform and there appears to be some way to go before they get it right.
