    Default Laptop running all night.

    Hi all,
I used to DJ in a club in Malta in the 90’s which is now closed and did it for about 10 years. I have been asked to do a reunion in one of the bars and I agreed to DJ this all night. I have not done anything like this for about 15 years so looking forward to it. Obviously in the 90’s I used SL1200’s turntables and not the pioneer stuff so looking forward to have a go with CDJ2000 and a DJM2000 mixer. I DJ at home with a Numark mixdeck express as a hobby attached to a laptop. My plan for this party is to hook up the laptop to the CDJ’s and use them as a controller.
My question and only worry is at home I only run this laptop for about 2hrs max and I am concerned running this laptop for about 8 hours all in one go. It is an HP and only about a year old. Any of you on here run your laptops for such a long time with a DJ software running all night?

    Thanks in advance.

My laptop runs for 4-6 hours regularly no problem. Traktor does crash on me every now and again, nothing major just close the program and restart - only happens once every 20-30 gigs ... always take a backup , my first few gigs I loaded some track onto my phone for emergency but ideally another laptop!

Loading music to a phone is a good idea. I have also noticed that the CDJ2000 take a usb pendrive, so I can also stick the whole playlist on a pen drive too as backup until I can restart the laptop in case it crashes.

I think virtually all of us use laptops every night, for a good 4-6 hours at least.

    +1 for that.

Actually, I work as a programmer during the day, and I've got my work laptop on (running a LOT heavier stuff than DJ software) for around 8-10 hours a day. Never causes me any problems. I would be inclined to take some sort of backup though...even brand new machines are prone to going belly up unfortunately when you don't want them to.

I think that's very major! Software shouldn't be doing that!

...and I was about to evaluate Traktor to compare it to Serato (which just works, although can suffer from stutter on the display side of things)

To be fair, there could be something causing the software to crash though such as hardware problems, running short on disc space/RAM, overheating.

Maybe I'll have a look at Traktor after all just to see if I can make it crash on a test machine

I'm probably tempting fate - but I've never had Traktor crash on me (or any other DJ programme). If it did I'd take that particular computer out of service until I knew the cause and fixed it.

    My thoughts exactly.

I've used laptops for the past 5 years and only had one crash with VDJ (guessing from 400 gigs).

I don't think you should have any issues with overheating. I would give it a good dust however and make sure the vents are clear but other than that you should be fine. I've done a few longer gigs and never had an issue.

Indeed it would be major issue if I didn't have a backup and if it didn't play the rest of the song. Most of the time it just forces me to cue another track up on the other laptop and nobody knows and different.
No idea why it happens, done it on 2 laptops and 2 different sound cards so I would say it's a software issue?

Seem as it only happens every 100 hours I'm not too bothered.
