    Default 90's Music

    Hi,

I've taken a booking for a school reunion, and all they are wanting in 90's music.

I'm struggling to fine enough music to cover over 4 hours for this.

Usually my gigs require a variety of music, which is never a problem, but not had to stick for one decade before.

    Any ideas guys?

    I.e. Blur, oasis, pulp etc.

    Cheers.

You're struggling to find 4 hours of tunes from 10 years of music? Hang up your headphones!

Use the genres that were popular then.

Just off the top of my head I can think of Britpop / Indie, Dance, Cheesy Pop, Boy / Girl Bands & that's without really thinking about it.

Use those as a starting point, make a list of tracks & see what you come up with. Once you start, you'll soon come up with others to go with what's on your list.

You have an entire decade of Now That's What I Call Music! albums to choose from.

I'd recommend boy bands Blue and Five!!

My problem is my current lack of 90's stuff, need to increase my collection for that decade

Good call on the older now collections, I'll look at purchasing them.

    Cheers.

There's some great cheese on the Now 30's and 40's.

Blue & Five have already been mentioned. Add to that Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Spice Girls, Steps, S Club 7, B*witched and Venga boys and you've got about 4hrs of (very cheesy) music straight away Here's a few other genres to explore - Indie (Blur, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Greenday, Supergrass, etc), R&B (Christina Aguilera, Mark Morrison, Usher, Nelly, R Kelly, Ini Kamoze, Blackstreet, etc) and what is loosely Reggae (Shaggy, Chaka Demus & pliers, etc). You might also want to look up 90's dance/trance if your crowd are into higher energy music (Darude, Sash, ATB, etc).

    Blood boiling time.

Please don't take gigs that you can't handle or don't understand. Is it any wonder that mobile DJs get a bad name from time to time if this happens? Other forums are loaded down with 'DJs' asking what they should play at a 70's/80's/90's/Indie/Motown/Rock n Roll/Northern Soul night.

If you have to ask, you're not the right person for the job. Move it on and take another booking within your comfort zone. There's no shame in it.

And before the righteous start preaching that everyone has to start somewhere, I'm sure the client would prefer it not to be at their party!
If my plumber arrives next week and doesn't know how to install the shower part properly, I'll be a) very disappointed & b) not paying him!

Gotta do it to learn it. That's how we all did it. Nowadays the new guys have fantastic resources, of which this forum is a fine example, to help them through.

I think this attitude is pretty poor and is not what this forum is all about. People do have to start somewhere and there is nothing wrong with stepping out of your comfort zone once in a while. It's the way we as DJs learn to evolve. DJs aren't born they are made. DJ skills can be taught and the best teacher is experience. Your plumber analogy is way off the mark because your plumber would have learnt his skills at college and / or on apprenticeship. Mobile DJ college courses are few and far between so the best places to learn are from experienced forum members like those we have here. That's what we do here.

My biggest concern is that your comments will put people off coming here fur help and advice. And this happens then the spirit of the forum will be gone forever. There's a reason the forum has so many members and this is that reason!
