Default Help required - Northern Soul Night

Firstly, merry Xmas to all. Hope you have had a great time.

So on to the point in question, Northern Soul night.

I have been asked if this is something we could cover. Feedback to client - "I would need to do some research". It's a regular customer so they were happy with the honesty.
29 years of DJing and I have never covered a night like this. I have seen quite a few of the lads on here talking about the Northern Soul nights and thought it would be a good starting point to see if anyone could share there usual playlists for this style of night.

So, if anyone is willing to share there lists it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Iain

    Here’s a few I regularly play.

The Soundtrack to the film ‘Soul Boy’ is a good buy, all killer, no filler, unlike a lot of NS compilations.

It’s actually a fairly hard night to do properly as you can get stuck with it all sounding the same, you have to know the tunes to be able to vary the style and pace to keep it interesting.

    Thanks funkymook,

I'm starting to realise it's not going to be as easy a night to put together as I first thought. Seems to have the same challenges as the now rockabilly nights I have been doing which started off from djing at a hot rod weekend. That started of as a bit of a car crash (no pun intended).

There’s a good 40 or so classics that appear on most of the “Best of’ type compilations, they’ll be your core - then just listen to lots of other NS and pick out the ones you personally like, you’ll soon get a feel for it.

Keep the lighting simple as well - just a mirrorball effect would be fine.

And if anyone complains you're not playing off original vinyl give them a packet of Space Dust so they get all the crackling and popping they’re used to....

On the assumption that the punters aren't diehard afficianados of the genre, but merely " enthusiastic amateurs ", Soul Survivors Vol 1 and 2, and the North of Watford series should furnish you with the core of an evening. Don't forget Tamla Motown, of course. Quite a few tracks from that label ( You watching, Steve? Peace on Earth, and goodwill to all men. Today, it's a Label. ) qualify as bona fide NS.

Look at Mastrmix Classic Cuts. They have two issues (not sure what numbers) full with the best Northern Soul tracks.
