    Looking for examples of solo artists from the 80s that kinda typify the music of the era, male/female and pop/rock...

    I'm thinking along these lines...

    Male Pop: Michael Jackson
    Female Pop: Madonna

    Male Rock: Billy Idol
    Female Rock: Pat Benatar


    If anyone can think of better exemplars please let me know.

    Well, there really is no alternative to Michael Jackson, you might consider Kylie against Madonna but then Kylie only hit the tail end of the 80s.

    I can't help but think there are bigger names than Billy Idol and Pat Benatar for solo rock stars, but all I can come up with are bands. What about Elton John?
