Default My first own speaker repair

One of my altos started to sound nasty at low volumes - fine if it was given some welly but not at background levels. So, I investigated & found the woofer was rubbing. Gah. I ordered a replacement & it arrived yesterday. 15 minutes after arriving home the new one was fitted & the old one disemboweled to find the root cause.

What might be clear from the photo is a definite puncture in the voice coil former - horizontally, at about the resting point of the cone. The coil itself looked a teensy bit cooked (slightly discoloured) but otherwise fine. So what had caused the puncture? Oh probably the speaker hitting the ground sideways when it fell from my trolley a while back.

Take good care of your kit folks. I've learned my lesson.

Blue Aran would have re-coned it for you.

By the time I'd paid for a courier & the recone itself it would've been more than the woofer. Plus, if they had recone kits for this model I might have been tempted to try it myself
