    Default Zimbabwean Music?

    Hi guys

Well just as I was retired and selling my kit I got a call from a guy who got me several bookings in the past asking if I could help out a friend of his who desperately needed a DJ this weeked for his wedding Apr 8th due to a string of unlikely events

So seeing as I just got back in the U Kand have not sold my kit yet (yes I know you want a few bits Daryll) I decided to quote a bit higher than I normally would to play this one last booking this Saturday as stuff i am putting on ebay will not sell till after the weekend, and I got it.

Thing is this is a mature wedding (aged in their 50s-60s) the groom is English and the bride is Zimbabwean. About half the guests are Zimbabwean and some are coming from Zimbabwe specifically for the wedding.. I have asked if they could bring any music they want on usb stick, or give me a list of songs but I got 'if you go on google and search for zimbabwean music you will find the popular stuff'. This mind you is from a guy who I just asked about the first dance and he said to me 'oh....someting smoochy' I suggested he asked the bride-to-be who has the delightful name of 'More Blessing' and he said she would be more interested in having a good few drinks than the actual song! This could be considered a good or bad omen, I'm not too sure.

OK so ZImbabwean Music then - what do I need to know?

This may not be too helpful as i have done a few Ivory coast weddings, but they do like similar stuff to latin / chilled Carribean. Anything with a vocoded voice (its all very similar) - lovely sounding music. Modern caribbean Soca is quite fast and I have found North African music to be much slower and more dancehall based rather than the mental D&B speed stuff, but it may be different in Zimbabwe? I hope that helps.

Anything Fuse ODG and your onto a winner!! This is very french based, so it may not translate to Zimbabwe as I guess there music is more Creole/African??? On question to ask is if they are coming from Zimbabwe or living in the UK as thats a game changer.

Here is a video (this bride did not really think we would need any African music, but it would have been really dead without it - glad I did my research and found the list below before hand!!):

Toby, top marks for research and service, you do seem to get a lot of left of centre gigs, and cope with them admirably, well done.

As always though, one or two slightly surprising tracks in there, Ride On Time and Love Come Down for example!

Thanks Peter, I do like a challenge makes it fun and I always try to do a different set each night to suit the client/guests.

The soul/dance music stuff wont really work so well with proper African guests (i.e. not living in the UK) from my experience, but Sean Paul type (Bashment) music should. If you had a mixed bag of london living Africans and a few guests from abroad, then the soul/funk stuff is gold. Fat-back band and luther is always a winner. In this wedding I had no problems with just the African music tbh. as its very listenable (better than latin music IMO) but this may be very regional as I have done Ghanan and ivory coast weddings, which are very French influenced. Did a south african wedding the other day and its more like a Ausi set.
