Default I needed an authentic instrumental version for a thing, so er...

There's a FREE program called ISSE - interactive source separation editor which unfortunately was my only route to getting a reasonable quality instrumental of Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I tried doing phase cancellation with the original & an acapella but it just wasn't happening (the acapella was a slightly different speed). Doing funky stuff with the stereo image wasn't a goer either because of the amount of stereo reverb on Whitney's voice.. so...

    About 12 hours later...

    Wow!

That has got to be the best vocal removing pieces of software I've ever heard!

Yeah well, there was a lot of manual trial & error tracing the path of Ms Houston's voice, so there's quite a lot of skill involved in spotting patterns.

There's a much more automatic program for this kind of thing called ADX TRAX Pro, but it's only for Mac users - and it's expensive.

I couldn't resist downloading the software and seeing what was involved.

And involved is the word! I imagine that was quite a time consuming task.

Was this for a client out of interest?

I ask as an audio production service would have charged about £500 to do that piece of work!

No, it's for a thing. That thing being, sometimes couples want to make an entrance of themsel.. er I mean make a grand entrance, so I use bits of music to augment the moment a smidge. In the past I've used a DIY instrumental edit of Beyonce's Crazy in Love among others (that being a very popular choice with it being so fanfarey) & I've had designs on using this Whitney track for the same kind of thing.

I'm currently building up a library of handy little bits of utility music.

Btw for one reason or another I've always wanted to have an instrumental version of this track. Always. Like since 1987
