So what are you using for this? Mdjm assumes an aveage length of 3 minutes & tells the client how long their event is vs the tunes...
What I'm keen to know is how I can have a lovely simple playout file import without ever involving itunes.

Have to agree with the people that said decade/theme nights. Have had a few 80's/90's nights this year and they have been absolutely fantastic, people dressed to suit and full dance floor all night even though last one was a week ago in the heat.
Weddings would fall below birthdays as well.

VDJ and a bit of custom development on my site
I import the database.xml that supports VDJ into the DB behind my website, brining in the path to the file, first seen date/time, play count, title, album and artist. I can then rank search results based on the past play count (which does make the usual suspects float to the top, but usually helps the customer with selection) and also export the playlist as an .m3u (straight back into VDJ).
Simples.

95% of my work over the past few years was weddings and up until around April I was really getting burnt out on them.
Following a great talk at an AmpDJ meet I went home, told my wife that was me for bookings for the year, closed my calendar and decided I'm only taking on a max of 3 per month / gross total of 40 depending: (as a teacher I can really ram July and August mid-week without too much issue)
All of a sudden I'm not back to really enjoying every single gig, it's not a chore and I feel like I'm in control of my own time and energy.
A side effect of this is, after doing one last kids party (which I actually enjoy) to help a pal out, it's nothing but weddings from here on out and I'm fine with that.
Kids parties I really liked but they're exhausting. Birthdays etc... I've never particularly enjoyed - I think the thing I like most about doing this is I really get to play a part in a couple's special day and, with the best will and service in the world, the impact you have on a birthday party or whatever is a lot less than a wedding.

A smaller set up makes no difference at all IMO as the main work is standing there trying to figure our what people want, dealing with requests & doing the pre meets / or trackless management prior to the event. Unless you have dancfloors, staging or some serious sound and lighting, then it would only be a matter of 30 mins set up difference I assume? And anyone can do that, trying to work out what people want to dance too & doing amazing formality management/announcements is what we are really paid for.
Funny with the bar in the car, thats actually a good idea - car-bar! A good excuse to get a performance 4X4 or something and turn it into a mobile bar LOL. Cant think of anything off hand as most the cars I would want are too small? Would have to be a truck or van?
I would have refused to do a deal like that as it will attract the wrong crowd. If any of my venues went to Groupon I would be out of there. Having said that working with a cheaper agent, is brilliant as the lower budget clients go with them and we take the ones that can afford it more or hold the entertainment highly. Its amazing getting paid more than the photographer LOL.

For only about the second time in 12 months (eeek!), I whole heartedly agree with Toby (Dear Lord....take me now...I'm ready!)
Unless I'm providing stadium level kit (which I don't do!), my price is based on my experience at providing the perfect party! There are NO discounts!
It's not based on the amount of flashing lights, the number of speakers, the number of guests or indeed whether I'm filling in for a band that need to take a break after 45 minutes of standing on their feet (bless!).
It doesn't matter whether I'm working for an hour or five hours...my price is my price, it covers the cost of running as a business (I can only be in one place at a time after all!), puts food on the table and a roof over my head!
'Nuff said
Anyways...we're moving off topic and onto a pricing thread at a rapid rate of knots!
Let's get back to what your favourite gigs are, because it's interesting seeing how many people aren't putting weddings as their No 1!
Has the day of the specialist wedding DJ come to an end (it has where I live )

Year 11 (15/16 year olds) proms are always a blast!
Mainly due to them being old enough to think their all grown up and having a good time but young enough to not (mostly) be drinking - so a trouble free evening.
From the first to last track their always rammed onto the dance floor as close to the set-up as possible.

I really couldn't say as each gig within each type of gig is different. Eg: I Did a wedding for a couple in their early 30s and played a set of UK Garage as well as old skool r&B as well as a load of Britpop/Indie towards the end. I then might do a 50th birthday with loads of 80s music which I'd also enjoy being 'my era'.
