Default Do I need a mixtape?

One for the wedding DJ's specifically - have you ever been asked for a mixtape from a prospective couple?

Over the last 15 years I think I've been asked a handful of times, but it now seems to be becoming more common. Why? Because couples want to check out "how I manage transitions in music". These questions often come from places like Hitched and Bridal forums who post lists of things to ask vendors, but they're frequently US based forums and some of the questions are irrelevant or a bit misplaced in the UK.

To be honest, it's probably a valid thing - but I'm interested to know who actually has one, and what's in it?

They'd soon work out that " That was Dancing Queen by Abba, and this is You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman Turner Overdrive " was what they were going to get.

During lockdown I made about 12 one hour long mixes covering various genres and decades. I use them for warm up before the first dance or while guests are arriving.

On the 2 occasions I have been asked for a mixtape I ask them what decade interests them and send them one of these.

No, and anyone who asked, and insisted on one, I would not take the booking if honest.

Only really applies if you are a genre specialist DJ etc - a general wedding DJ this isn't really important.

In 16 years been asked twice, both times fake enquiries from other DJs.

I have done a few genre specific ones (but not really the sort of stuff you play at weddings). I did think of doing a few for the Wedding market because of the following

    1. Popular music is hugely affected by copyright on popular streaming sites for mixes.
    2. Wedding DJing is hugely influenced by what's happening infront of you and client input. Your mix out of Dancing Queen into the Macarena may of worked a treat at that one Wedding but it will bomb the following night.

I think putting a mix up could be as much as a turn off as a turn on.

These have been the primary reasons I have given before for not doing it. Copyright and every wedding is different.

Similar scenario is I remember my second ever wedding fayre I had Michael Buble playing as background music, he was REALLY popular then.
A bride walked up and said to her fiance "oh no, I don't like Michael Buble" and walked on haha

From that day I NEVER play music at a wedding fayre and the same scenario may happen with a mixtape etc
