From memory, and from all sources I can locate, it was the man himself - Del Shannon.
Extra Info just found....
From: http://www.jumptheshark.com/c/crimestory.htm
"I once had the opportunity to ask Del Shannon why he changed the words on the theme song. Propriety keeps me from repeating his response here."

I cannot locate a source for the theme as a standalone, however, Del Shannon's "Runaway" is available on a number of boxed "60's" Collection, or, the DVD's of the series are available on amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?&i...=tellytunes-21
is that any help?

Steve's probably got several copies of the usual version already (plus it's one of my favourite tracks) ...... it's the version from the TV series he's now after!
Thanks anyway
