I'm confused as to what the benefit is of staying in the centre of Birmingham, instead of at a hotel at the NEC?

A very good point. Once upon a time, one hotel would be the one chosen by the majority, and having gathered on a night, the massed ranks of the MDD would descend on central Brum, usually Reflex. This meant cheap taxis if the merry band could be held together.
Staying at the NEC was tried one year by many, but had drawbacks. Cost of taxis into Brum and back was high, unless you had a teetotal driver.
Last year saw much entertainment laid on at the NEC for the first time, including free drinks, so thus staying onsite held much appeal. It really depends on whether you want to spend your time at the NEC, or party until the early hours in Broad Street. And believe me, some MDD members have really partied hard in the early hours.
The compromise plan of finding an hotel with a transit friendly car park near the train station means you save money on car park charges at the NEC ( which to be honest are exorbitant ) and can travel between the NEC and central Brum for pennies, and have a drink at any time.
Nowadays, we are becoming splinter groups, so it's whatever suits you best.

Well if you want it put simply, drinking until 4am in the Tap and Spile, if that's your bag.

For anyone interested, book a room at Crown Plaza, and get parking for £10 per 24 hour period - which I believe is much cheaper than other NEC based options?

That's Alan and myself booked into the crown plaza for the Sunday night
