Would have loved to have been there, and we were hoping to (trying to) sort it right up until the last minute, but I'm afraid you can't fit a quart in a pint pot, and just can't fit it in

    Have a great day!

Shame you couldn't make it, you missed a great day. Met loads of friends, and was delighted to make the acquaintance of Daryll and his wife ( to whom I must apologise for not getting her name. Sorry. )

I'm shattered, and will settle for now for thanking James H and his team for all their efforts to make the day the success it was, so much so that we were inundated with rigs, and time flew by.

And enormous praise must go to the redoubtable Andy Neen ( Deltic ) for his efforts in setting up the playout system for us all, and then playing the tracks out each time for each rig. Well done that man, he turned up after a near four hour drive with a load of kit, and shared his time, expertise, and gear with all and sundry. ( Once we'd sorted out which way round the snake went, things improved no end. Especially when I was pointed to the correct end to plug into. )

Thanks everyone, it was an education. More tomorrow when I've had some sleep. I'm getting too old for this lark.

Absolutely ace day out, I had the pleasure of meeting Peter (Excalibur), I nicer man you would be hard pressed to meet ( my wife`s name is Dee............), huge thanks to James and Andy , that was a lot of hard work that went into the show , I am sure I meet loads of people, the weather on the way back got worse , and I had to pop in to harrow to pick some home entertainment speakers up , snow up to M25/M40 , rain until Petersfield, a tiring day , but worth it, the cable police were banned for the day .
there were no bad sound systems , all were producing professional sound quality , all EQ was flat, all had the same tracks played.

    Cheers

Well since Daryll has made me go all by singing my praises, I've got to say that he too is a lovely bloke, and his wife Dee is equally nice. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with them and others I met there. Neil ( Deckstar ) and Dave ( WWDJ ), Dave Jackson and his wife, James and his crew, who were all brilliant ( even when I pinched someone's orange juice by mistake at breakfast. Sorry. ) and of course Shaun ( Flatliners ) and Andy (Deltic ). I'm awful with names, and I know I've left a lot of folk out, so sorry if I missed you out.

As for the cable police, well we had a special dispensation from them, so no impending prosecutions. ( I wish I'd taken a picture of the back row, it took me ten minutes to retrieve four speakon cables from one side of the room to the other. )

Daryll is right about the quality of the rigs, and there were none there which wouldn't have produced a very acceptable sound at most functions. However, I must sound a slightly sour note here, about people making derisory comments without being in possession of all the facts. In the first session, ( almost ) all participants were given as near as possible the identical signal, with a completely flat EQ, and no effects or processing. It soon became apparent that some folk ( myself included ) hadn't set their systems up correctly, and one in particular was terribly disappointing first time round. This much was apparent, when it was eclipsed by a smaller system using many of the same cabs. In the free-for-all later, with the collective knowledge in the room, and a bit of judicious tweaking, many systems were improved beyond recognition, especially when they were fed with Adam F's rig, with all its bells and whistles.

This led to one or two comments that the brand of kit used was the reason for the improvement. Cobblers! Once I'd set up my rig, we gave it an input from Andy's desk, and I was disappointed with the sound, as was Andy. He pressed the EQ button, moved three faders, and in two seconds, it sounded lovely. I know what that playout is capable of, because I've heard it used at a function. The object of the exercise was to give everyone as near as possible the same signal, with a completely flat EQ, not to make each one sound brilliant by setting it up.

Right, to the sounds produced. It's becoming more and more obvious to me how much our ears and tastes vary. I was standing next to Daryll when the Logic system fired up, and we both remarked immediately how beautiful it sounded, as far as we were concerned, the others were also rans. I spoke to two people standing within a couple of yards of us, who both said how poor it was!

For me, the star of the show was that Logic system, even above the big QSC and OHM rigs. As for the smaller rigs, the W Audio offerings with 10" tops, and 10" or 12" subs both punched well above their weight, as did the FBT Vertus, which to my ears probably suffered from following the Logic system. Shaun's EV tops seem to me to suit RCF bins, and I thought it sounded nicer with them than his EV bin. I heard the RCF D line tops, and they didn't make me want to rush out and buy a pair.

So, last year, I would have liked to take home the two Warrior 15" actives to use, even though they were up against some stunning kit. What did I fancy this year? Well, although I loved the Logic rig, it wasn't what I'd like to take on the road. That honour goes to Mr Jacksons Yamaha bin and two 15" tops. The Yamahas were the prettiest cabs ( along with the QSC ) , and the most versatile I thought. The little Warrior rigs would have suited my "legslappers" gigs perfectly, as would the FBT, but they wouldn't have coped with the Young Farmers gig I'd had the night before.

All in all, a truly great day, and I'm pondering what to take next year. Only thing I'm certain of, it will be lighter than this year!!

I still use the W-Audio PSR 15A actives from time to time as I feel they are a fantastic crossover between quality and price. This is what prompted me to buy the Zenith 110 tops and 210 subs on show yesterday. I just feel the sub/sat look is a bit nicer for posher venues, rather than a bloody great speaker on a tripod. They can be a little power hungry though and will take a fair bit more than the 250w rating of the tops and 300w subs. (both RMS continuous) As recommended by the guy at Prolight who actually designed the system, I have just bought a w-Audio EP1800 to power them with. Obviously there is quite a bit of headroom there!
I loved Steve's Logic system once he'd got it set up right. I also liked the B-52s and the RCF's were very nice.

Nice to see you again Mr Excalibur.

And not simply the fact that the 15" cabs are just ridiculously heavy? Those 10" cabs looked very user friendly.

I have liked all the Warrior/W Audio stuff I've heard so far, and my passive PSR 12's probably go out with me for 95% of my gigs.

    High Praise, Thanx Peter,
I was one of the few who were quite happy with how my system sounded even run flat, I liked the FBT Vertus and the Blue Logic was fantastic,
I thought that 22 systems was maybe a little much, but it was good to see that budget systems are now sounding better.

Only thing I need to do now is go on a diet, I look huge on the photos
